I am a regular user but posting under a new name as I would rather this didn't get back to YO through a rumour before I tell him myself.

Would you move yards under these circumstances?

Yard 1
Lovely facilities and friendly people
20 mins from home
Pay to use school, substantial charge if you want to bring in an instructor
No floodlights in school or jumps
Amazing hacking but 100m of road to get onto it
Not allowed to do eachothers horses, must pay YO. Excellent care but not cheap
Competition venue

Yard 2
Nice facilities
Bigger box
Free to use floodlit school or jumping paddock
Private farm hacking
Own paddock to control as I wish
People allowed to bring eachothers horses in, YO doesn't do it for you.
More storage space
7 mins from home
Cheaper
Only downside is that I don't know anyone there and I would need to do a 30 min hack to get back to old yard when I want to compete.

I'm fairly decided but would you move to yard 2? Will my horse settle?

2nd yard, would work out better for you, your should settle eventually

took my arab gelding a year to settle down when we moved him.

2. More than likely.

Go.

I'd move, but have you also considered the liveries at the new yard, will you be happy there?

yes, yard 2.
go for it........
sounds fab and your horse will love it.
my boy settled in a few days after living at the same yard for 7 years!!!

Good luck and hope you both are happy and make loads of new friends!!!!!!!!!

I would move. The second yard sounds like it has everything you need aswell as being closer and cheaper, which will surely make life easier.

As with all things you don't know until you try, and as long as you leave your current yard on good terms if you don't like the new yard you can always go back.

Thanks people, its reassuring to know that you don't think it will traumatise her and no-one commented that they wouldn't want to hack to a show

I'll let you know how the move goes under my real name once I have told YO

good luck! i am in the same situation, bit different but would appreciate any advice especially from Samwise!

current yard:
ALL my friends are there, a lot of friends who are only yard friends and mean a lot to me
we are all in the same pony club and we all train together and do the same things like share lessons
fields are ok, well managed although too many horses are in them and water is left for me to clean out, ragwort grows (although they do get it out) and there is a dangerous piece of machinery that is like growing out of the ground which YO refuses to move
YO daughter is my best friend and i dont think she will forgive me if i moved
i learnt to ride there
its a riding school
they are really laid back and helpful, very experienced although a bit toooo laid back if you know what i mean, yard is a mess and things don't get done
can go straight out onto the common, no roadwork, good hacking and can hack to xc courses and other commons
2 very small sized schools, made up of mud, 1 floodlit, extremely unlevel and are always being used, jumps available
stables are OK
20 a week (inc schools, fields, jumps, stable and will bring in/ take out for free and whenever although won't change rugs and no option to pay more for half or full livery) so my mum is happy!
10-15 mins away in the car
my sisters would have to move too and they have friends there

possible yard:
1 big outdoor arena
1 small indoor arena
10 mins away in car
30 a week
solarium
smaller fields
friendly although not too experienced
1 friend there who i recently met, in the pony club too
very good common although roadwork
not a riding school
stables in a barn

im stuck! i haven't seen possible yard yet but mum is quite willing and so am i although she doesn't want to leave our present yard!
any help apprecited!

forgot to add, my horse is very attactched to his friends and gets really distressed, although would probably attach himself to another horse quickly! what was yours like when he came to you? mine wouldn't shut up or eat for about 3 days :S but he is generally so much calmer

Do you pay for your horse or do your parents? The new yard does sound nicer but an extra £10 a week adds up. I'm working on the basis that I will make new friends at the new yard so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I'm guessing that you're a teenager from what you've said so if I was you I'd find out the age of people at the new yard. If they are all over 30 I'm sure you'd get on but they might not become the yard 'friends' that you are used to.

If you haven't been to your new yard yet I'd suggest you go and have a really good look round and go with your gut instinct. The bottom line is where would you and your horse be happier overall?

Thanks, yer my mum spends all of her money that she earns on my horse, bless her!! she was really keen about it when i told her the price and facilities although she said, i don't know if i could leave because shes very good friends with the YO. Yer there is one person a year older than me, i dont think there are other people our age though, because she says she gets lonely. Well my horse would have to have another horse in the field with him (i know my friends horse is a mare so that wouldnt work) and i found out they never bring in or out so would have to get up before school and do it :S i think that i am happy where i am although the other yard might be better for my horse, because the facilities and my yard atm are not great, i am tierd of not being able to ride, because the school is flooded, or its too windy so all the sand has blown away!!
