Being able to see, from their field, someone cantering on a public lane, 1/4 mile from their field, or about 2 fields away?

Just got a complaint passed to me from my new livery yard owner. Went out today for a short hack, along the said lane, there is very poor hacking, so had a quick canter along a soft part of the lane. I could see some horses in the distance a couple of fields away, but they were big fields and it was too far to be able to see what they were doing. Which didnt seem to be anything more than grazing, as far as I could see.

The only other horse that I could think I might have upset was in a field on its own and came careering down as I trotted and then walked past its field. But surely you cannot be expected to walk everywhere just in case you might upset a horse in a field you might pass?

Cantering right next to a field with a horse in it I can agree is not on, but trotting is fine!

Or am I a wild out of control rider.? The complaint that was passed on to me was that the neighbour was very angry as I had been galloping up and down the road sending her horses crazy.

I've had horses for over 20 years and have never had anything like this said to me before. I am upset and more than a little ****ed off. I have a horse for pleasure, not to have to listen to this sort of thing.

Cantering within shouting distance of other horses? How dare you!!!?

No, seriously, this is not your fault - god if we all had to stay away from other horses then where the hell would we ride!? What's wrong with ponios in fields giving themselves a bit of exercise FGS?

The only thing I can think that would upset me is if the horses were recovering from something and thus not supposed to gallop - but if this is the case then the owner should keep them in!

Horses will be horses. I wouldn't worry about it.

You can canter round my three girls whenever you fancy...I left them out in the field whilst the local hunt cantered round the next door field, complete with XC jumps...and they watched with interest as the hounds drew the woods two fields along from them.

Both my fields are on hills so I have horses trotted passed all the time. Some times my guys may canter over to see them they go up the field with them but it doesn't bother me. Opposite my winter field is the local P2P trainers gallops so we have up to 5 horses galloping passed every day, the only time the horses really bother is if she starts shouting but thats because my gelding was rescued and gets nervous around shouting. I wouldn't dream of complaining about her though, its her land she can do what she wants and I canter pass her yard occasionally when I am in the stubble fields, she doesn't moan about me either.
The only time I would stop is if there is someone trying to catch them or they are getting very distressed, looking to jump out etc or if I am in a field and a horse is on the road, I will walk passed as I wouldn't want to cause someone to bolt on a road.

Horses can see things in the distance that neither you nor I can see. However, this complaint is utterly ridiculous

by heck i do that - the people dont own the other side of the fence do they its public - if by a a road and big verge no signs by council council not to ride on soft grassy verge is there
nope--
tell her you pay taxes to

i do it and i bet theres a heap of others to, if a farmers land and you was cantering in there field yeah might have a problem
if you dont respect the land- ie go whre the tractor goes as normally down the sides of fields they cant get to-give and take and all that--
i she can keep them in - anyways i pass laods of fields that are actually road side and they always canter and gallop or trot up whose to say its not them that upset your horse into a canter --

she cant prove it wasnt can she

What on earth.................? How can it be wrong to ride your horse in the vicinity of other horses? Where I live its virtually impossible!! Sometimes they arse about and set my horse off but that's just tough! I can't believe someone had a go at you about it, how utterly pathetic.

How ridiculous. Our fields have a bridleway running along the bottom of them and then along one side. The bottom bridleway is really inviting and most local horses bomb along there when the ground permits. My horses either take no notice or go to the fence and watch as if to say "rather you than me" then carry on eating! Take no notice - if these horses are so upset by another horse cantering on a public path/lane, perhaps they should be wrapped up in cotton wool.

We have gallops around the outside of our fields, be a bit silly if we were not allowed to canter around them!

Sometimes Axel will canter along the side of the fence if there's someone there jumping the jumps! He loves it

Thanks. I am racking my brains to think if there was some other horse I hadnt noticed that I had cantered past and had got really upset. But I can only think of the chestnut, and that one could only have seen me cantering in the distance and was more upset because it was on its own.

But you know that way you get upset by these sort of criticisms? I suspect its that my livery yard owner's neighbour doesnt like the idea of a livery yard opening up next to her. But its embarrassing and its not the sort of thing I like to hear when I've just got in and am putting my feet up. I'm going to feel like I'm constantly being watched and judged now as that lane is the only way you can reach anywhere else.

I know I can be unsympathetic to people who claim to have "mentally fragile" horses. I'm off the more practical school. For some reason, I'm always lucky that the horses I own are invariably bombproof and calm and I can just enjoy them, rather than the hysterical sort that might injure themselves by cantering about their own fields. And I grew up hunting in the borders and actually ride my horse, rather than over-feeding it and under-exercising it and keeping it as some sort of ornament.

But its hassle I can do without. Not happy.

people used to gallop there horses past poppy and becky's field up at the farm. do they not canter and gallop around fields themselves, the horses that is? i thought it was in there nature. better make sure all other horses are out of sight lol!! nah i think its a very silly complaint to make.

My horse would not be upset. I was driving him on Saturday... following the hunt and a field of 60 and 14 couple of hounds galloped past him less than 100 yards away. My lad just trotted on!

I know all horses arent as good as mine. But I do think that this woman is over reacting. Why is she keeping her horse in a place wher it might see someone cantering (and many other exciting things) if it can't cope with it?

Its the way it was put. That I was "galloping up and down the road" (meaning the track) "sending her horses crazy". It sounds awful. I've never had anything like that said to me before. I used to live in an area with a much higher horse density, like every seond person seemed to have horses, and you constantly rode past fields of them and I never had anyone say anything to me! I admit I do sometimes enjoy a canter on a soft piece of ground, be that a track or occasionally a grass verge but I dont go galloping about!

And there was only one of me! Its not as if there were a big gang of us!

I'm not sure I want to keep a horse in such a strict place. I've also been told only to walk in the 2 fields that belong to the livery yard because the ground is so soft in winter (even round the edges). I mustnt open the gate into the school from horseback in case my reins catch on it.

I've only lived up here (Aberdeen) for about a year and am wondering if the place. I've met so many people up here who revel in this sort of exaggerated, hysterical moaning. I am constantly taken aback by their rudeness and lack of ability to see anyone's point but their own. I know you get people like that everywhere but it seems more prevalent here. My previous yard owners were renowned for it (though I got on fine with them), only one farrier would visit their yard because they had argued with all the others. All my neighoburs in my street have argued with each other and barely speak.

Reading the text again and thinking about what has been said, it does seem that at this yard they want me not to do anything but walk when out of the school. It really does seem that anything else will cause problems. And its a long hack to any other off road riding.

Oh dear, I am not looking forward to going up tomorrow.

Oh for goodness sake, tell them to get a life. What do they think horses do amongst themselves in a field - or even in the wild, which, if these people could get their heavy heads around, is a state they are only a little bit away from? Be strong, these people are pathetic

My horses would be the ones in the field who gallop up to the gate frightening the quiet horse who was trying to ride past.... Where we lived before a local girl used to get off and lead her horse past my field!

You can't be responsible for others horses - if they can not deal with the goings on in their paddock they should not be there, and it should not be for you to accomodate them.

Ditto.

I would be pretty angry and also upset by the comments made too quite honestly. Does sound like they are a bit "namby pamby" at your yard. Is there anywhere else you could move to, or are they all out of the same mould do you think? Christ, when I was a kid I spent half my life cantering along the verges jumping drainage ditches and the like - wouldn't have had a clue what was around me. I find it impossible to believe that horses in fields can't cope with seeing other horses go by. Unless they are as neurotic as the owner sounds...

I'm afraid it would be this way with mine too

I have had people moaning about them messing about and upsetting their horses - so I've spoken very firmly to the ponies and... they've taken no notice

I certainly don't mind if someone chooses to canter or gallop past their field, I'm sure people do it all the time.

I think you will have to ignore the comments.

It does seem that way, namby pamby I mean. I have just moved there, been there a week. I dont think all the yards are like this, but having encountered this and having got the feeling of being watched, suspiciously and closely since i have been there, I'm worried that I might encounter it elsewhere. I have been at several livery yards before and since I am a keep my head down and get on with it sort of person who doesnt get involved in the arguements that sometimes arise, I've never had any problems.

I'm really taken aback to be honest, and quite upset. I know its only a small thing but I'm almost dreading going up today. I almost feel that I am seen as a brutal horse owner by daring to canter my horse outside the school. Hopefully it will settle down once they realise I am not the maniac horse stealing thug they obviously suspect I might be. As I say I have encountered this "here comes a stranger, lets throw a brick at them" attitude all too often since I moved up here, and I am pretty damned sick of it.

Charisil - your comments made me smile :-)
