Hi,
I'm 5ft 9in and have a 16.2hh TB which I feel comfortable with although I went from a 16hh to him and thought he was HUGE

Would 17.2hh be too big?

Not at all, i'm 5'8 and ride a 17hh horse who's still growing. I have long legs so i like big horses

Think you would have to try it and see how it feels. Every horse feels so different when your on them. My horse is 17hh yet when i ride my friends horse 16.1 he feel massive coz he carries himself so much bigger if that makes sense.

it depends on the horses temprement and your riding ablility IMO - for example if 17'2s worth of horse starting messing around with you would you be able to control it?

Just looking at the other side of the coin here.....

Agree with PG. I own a 17.2hh Irish Sports Horse and I am 5ft 4 however he is a saint. If he was a g*t I wouldn't want to be sat on him.
The other thing I would also consider is the horses way of going- a big lazy horse is a nightmare to get going.

I wouldn't say too big, it's upto you to ride him and see if you feel comfortable on something that size. I'm 5'6"-5'7" and I know that my limit of comfort is 16hh tops. All down to personal choice

im 5'1'' and ride horses from 11.2hh to 17hh but it does depend on how much horse your legs can physically cope with and also the type of horse, big boned horses will bring your legs up more.

17.2 arrrrhhhh i dont think id be brave enough to get on that one like i did with d !!!! lol
he was big enough for me mind you as time goes on im getting more dareing !!!! lol

I recently bought a 17.3 warmblood. Didnt think he was that big, as he didnt feel any bigger to ride than my 16.3 tb, howeever he was well behaved, and didnt muck around. If he had been a 17.3 shire, would have been to wide, I am 5ft7

think its personal choice!, i used to ride an 18hh horse who was a saint and i never felt he was too big (i'm 5ft 6!) on the other had had rode a friends 15hh cob and felt i had loads of horse under me!! strange as well that i looked smaller on the cob than the big b*gger!!!!!

Im 5'6 and about 8 stone and I dont find my 17.2 TB too big, he is a very short coupled chap though, Ive ridden a friend's 17 hand TB who felt like I was sitting in the middle of a bus! And you can see in upstairs windows whilst riding out (not that I do that of course)
