Wound advice..

Elsa has got a nasty gash just around the top of her coronet band running round her leg and down the back toward the frog.
Have had vet out and she has had a course of antibiotics and bute since the injury on wednesay.
Wound is looking clean and appears to be healing well.
I have it covered with a dressing and and have been applying intrasite gel everytime the dressing is changed.
I actually managed to get her out for he day today as the snow stopped it from getting dirty etc and I know once the snow melts turnout with this injury will just end up in infection.
My question is what to do next? Its knitting together nicely in places but there are little gapes along the wound. Do I keep it covered and moist (or dry) or is letting the air get to it a better option.
Any ideas on dressings that will stay in place (copious amounts of vetwrap and cotton wool haven't worked well!!) and wound creams or treatments much appreciated.

Hiya,

sounds like you've been doing everything right. From my experience with a very accident prone TB, I would keep it covered and moist as this encourages wound to heal from inside to outside which is what you want- otherwise infection can get trapped underneath.

Try MSM cream to keep it moist, seems to work on mine.

Yes you'll want to kep it moist until it has granulated. Is it on the coronet band or above it?
Flamazine cream is very good. Unfortunately because there is a lot of movement in the area it will be quite slow to heal. Orthoband over the dressing, then vetwrap and cover each end of vet wrap with elstoplast. Elastoplast can work out quite expensive so use the minimum to secure each end. Duct tape under the foot if you are including that in your bandage.

try a cream called derma gel. stops any proud flesh and is recommended by vets. keeping the would moist is desirable. try covering your vet wrap with gaffa tape. the silver tape. its very good at keeping dressings on the feet. i use this when i ever have to poutice a horses foot. x

for the actual dressing I have found Melolin the best (although expensive £1.79 or so per dressing) as this tends to stay in place fairly well.

I would do the above

The time I was looking after a girls horse at our yard, she cut herself before going away ( the horse that is

) .... The inside of her hock started to swell and the cut was looking infected, So I polticed for 5 days and then used flamazine cream along with cotton wool and vet wrap and elastoplast to hold it in place .

try sanitary towels as a cheap dressing to add cream or gel to, they also stick to your bandage
