How do people protect and waterproof wounds on legs?

My horse came in with quite a nasty cut on his fetlock last night - and whilst I would worry too much if the ground was dry, it's liable to infection with all this wet ground.

I've put a dressing on it - but how to waterproof and mud proof everything??

In the past I have used cling film over the dressing, followed by a bandage. It does make it a little sweaty, but does keep it dry. Alternatively you could put a brushing boot over the dressing/clingfilm.

We use this on a very stroppy mare, who had a very bad cut. She wasnt the sort to stay in, and over mid winter, this method kept the wound dry and clean until it healed.
