Wound on pony, and the healing process

Sorry for the obvious stupidity of me in making this post however if a pony has a wound that is quite large but not major (for example the size of a 50p piece) would there be a thickening of the skin whilst it was in the process of healing?

I cannot decide if it is the skin or a lump or abcess which has broken out, but still feels solid, as although there looks to be one big scab there are three small wounds underneath.

It could just be that he's been leaning over the barbed wire and impaled himself, or it could be something scary. Any info appreciated though!

If in doubt get the vet - (i asked the vet last week how you knew whether you need them or not and she said any hint of lameness from a cut / injury)!!!

My TB had a kick injury 2 months ago (got the vet as hopping lame and swollen that day), and it escalated into needing an operation to remove necrotic tissue, he is still convalescing now.

Hmm - possibly proud flesh developing. The last wound one of our horses had we were prescribed vulcatan (sp?) - it stimulated blood to the area, we had to hose the area for 5 - 10 minutes every day, pick of the scab (gross - but strangely compelling) and put the vulcatan on, it was amazing, it would start oozing blood and syrum straight away.

The upshot was that a large wound on the cannon bone, healed from the edges inwards with no proud flesh, no white hairs and only the tinest hairline scar where he deepest part of the would was.

Might be worth phoning the vet and getting some advice
