My mare was kicked on Tuesday protecting her mates from a grouchy mare. The cut is on her forearm and isn't too deep. There is no swelling and she is sound. Yesterday the wound was still leaking watery blood. Is that normal? She is turned out so is it still leaking due to movement? The wound is clean and she is up to date with tetanus.

Be suspicious because watery blood can easily be mistaken for synovial fluid if a joint or tendon sheath has been damaged. Is it pale straw coloured? If you have any doubts whatsoever how deep the injury may have gone or what damage may have been caused, get the vet out as an emergency because infection in the bone/joint/tendon sheath can be life threatening. Of course, it could be just a common or garden scrape in which case gently cleaning it and applying a wound gel to protect it is probably all you need to do. But do check extremely carefully if it's blood or synovial fluid.

Reilly had a kick on a front leg on the soft part on the inside at the top. It took 2 weeks to clear up and Kat from Donaldsons told me to do what I had been doing which was to bathe with warm salt water and put Dermagel on. He also had some antibiotic powders to help and it did go eventually. This wound had the same sort of liquid as you describe leaking from it but Kat said not to worry, was ok.

Hope Magic is ok and you too.
