Is there anything around, which will keep a wound covered and the flies off for long periods (24 hrs)?
Horse in question lives out and has taken a chunk off his heel (probably an overreach). It's like he's skinned himself and is about 2 to 3ins in diameter, so the flesh is exposed (there is no skin). I have it bandaged atm but want to let the air to it but of course it is attracting flies. I have purple spray but assume that will just wash off in the grass (its long) (and wet). Is there some miracle cream/spray that will withstand the elements?

Could you put a non stick dressing on it, bandage and/or boot. I know you want to leave it open but flies will do it no good at all. I wouldn't spray anything on it, and certainly not purple spray, horrible stuff! Clean with gauze, not cotton wool which leaves threads in the wound and salt solution made with boiled water, cover with a nonstick dressing, melolin perhaps, bandage and leave. It will heal. Oh and FWIW this new stuff that is out I wouldn't waste my money on. It's basis is dilute bleach.

It's been bandaged for the last two days as you've described above but just wondered if there was something I could use instead...perhaps I'll just carry on as I am for. I'm tryng to avoid him having to be stabled as he lives out and it's just an awkward area to keep bandaged..:)
Thanks:)

Summer Fly Cream works a treat too. It's bright yellow, which is a downside, but it doesn't come off and the flies really do seem to stay away.

I use Filtabac cream which I get through my vet. Its a barrier cream that you cover wounds etc in and stops flies getting at them. You can also use it over the top of other creams etc when needed. Brilliant stuff and always carrier in first aid box now. lol
