Ok, so my horse has got a small cut just below the fetlock towards the foot. Think she did it on a stubble field yesterday as she came back bleeding bad from a ride. I cleaned the wound with hibiscrub and put ointment on and turned back out after riding; this morning there was some swelling and heat around the fetlock and so I decided that from experience it may be worth trying to flush the cut with salt water which I did this morning and sprayed on some purple spray. Will go back up later to do the same again. I have a couple of sachets Danilon around is it worth giving those to her or no point as only two sachets? As many times as I have been in this sort of situation I am still unsure whether I should not just make a call to the vets anyway just to get some antibiotics... What is your thinking? If it has already started swelling up am I too late with my cleaning procedure and will she need ABs?

Please phone your vet! I am also very wary of injuries on or near joints. My horse is still recovering from a puncture wound to her coffin joint which required surgery to flush the infection (she went from walking fine when my friend found her and put wound spray on the tiny dot of a wound to non-weightbaring lame within 2-3 hours). IMO I'd rather pay for a vet visit and have the vet say things were fine than go through everything I have been (and am still going) through!

Hello, thought I'd post an update. On this occasion I was lucky and my wound flushing resulted in the desired result. Within hours the swelling came down and heat disappeared and the leg is nearly back to normal by now. Thanks for your replies and concerns, had this gone in any other direction the afternoon I posted this I would have got the vet out. Just glad now that all is ok.
