I want to say thankyou to whoever suggested i try Hemir in a 3 ring gag for hacking!! I finally came home without having had him pull my arms out of my socket!!

I tried him yesterday in the field in walk, trot and canter to see what he was like and how he responded to it...etc, then took him out for a little canter in the woods, he came straight back to me

then i pushed him into gallop just to see what sort of stopping ability we had...normally i really struggle and almost have to wait until the end of the track then he stops of his own accord

But yesterday i was able to stop him about 10 strides before the end, it took longer than it possibly could have to ask him to come back to trot but i suppose i was being lighter with my hands

When i was in the field, i pushed him to really stretch and really get used to the bit in walk, then i asked for him to pick up and start using his back end, he took a lovely contact, and felt really light in my hands and not once did he stick his head up in the air

He did buck a few times in canter but i think that was possibly because i was holding him too much and he was objecting to it, I think i was worried he would slip in the field!!

So maybe it was me being more carefull not to put too much pressure on his mouth that made him change so drastically, but even if it was, thats a good thing!!!!

A three ring gag really worked for my horse on X Country - meant I had instant brakes instead of having to haul away to get him to slow up.
Salivating round the mouth is usually a good thing afaik.

aaaaaaah you are here lol!!

glad you now have brakes!!
when they salivate:
when horses work on the bit the relaxing of the jaw should stimulate the production of saliva that helps the horse mouth the bit. Basically when they accept the bit- its good lol
