'How could you possibly think it's acceptable to post an article about feeding straight oats when we know that they are detrimental to ulcer prone horses, this could be hugely misleading for people who think this is advice printed by a well known magazine' - 'how do you think it's ok in the current day to publish a photo of a horse with such ill fitting tack, the times have moved on and we shouldn't be making publicity out of this'

Don't underestimate people! :p

Ha, I didn't even think of that! I read old stuff and find it interesting, but I expect you're right and some people wouldn't see it in the context of when it was written. And some people just like complaining!

I mean, I read all sorts of alarming/horrifying/bordering on witchcraft cures for lameness and other ills in 16th and 18th century books but it's never occurred to me to complain to the people I bought them from that they shouldn't be spreading such lies 🤣

If anyone has any older copies from early 2000-2015 I’d definitely be happy to give them a new home and obv pay

There are loads for sale on ebay, particularly from the 1970s onwards but also older ones. The prices vary a bit so worth looking at a few rather than just buying the first one of the date you want that you see (and check postage prices). I picked up a 1st edition from 1884 for less than £10 and with free p&p 😁

It’s such a shame, that magazine was a lifeline for me, a horse mad child/teenager in a non- horsey family. I would read it religiously every week. I stopped subscribing last year as it felt like the quality of journalism had taken a huge dive. Masses of hunting reports and barely any showing/dressage, ‘articles’ that read like sponsored ads or product placement, a new columnist who I actually wrote in to complain about because of some quite offensive/incredibly lazy writing, and just a general lack of fresh new content. It’s a real shame, I’d love another horsey magazine in my life if anyone can recommend a better one!

I run a good adblocker on my laptop, so reading HHO isn't too bad. However, if an article interests me when I'm on my phone (I don't have an ad blocker, but there probably is one), I soon give up before finishing it because the pop-up ads get too annoying.

I used to read it from over to cover and I-miss more than anything the breeding of practically every horse mentioned used to find it’s way in, along with where purchased and now it’s rare for even the sire to get a mention.
I know people have a short attention span but feel sad that there’s a need to dumb down quite so much.

It’s like a comic now. I glance at it online but never buy the magazine. After so many years in my youth of living for a Thursday (especially the two show issues), the excitement of waiting to see if you got a mention and, if horse hunting, to see what was in there that week, I find what it’s become so depressing.
