some idiot on facebook stated a 'nob on a horse riding on a road with blind corners, and 60mph' as he states (there was more but cant remember)

I just stated well some kn*bs need to slow down, and pass with due care and attention as per highway code. well many people including my sister! and her husband have come down on me like a tone of bricks so i stand my corner, and it ends up in a huge argument! WHY! the road is a bridle path the horse has every right to be there just as any of the cars that are, and as a driver they are to maintain the code!

am i being insane in thinking this is the way or have i been reading a totally different highway code to all of them.

They have also gone on to say they are stating that the 'poor horse' should not be put subject to this and i said was it under control, yes, well then its not a problem?

Im utter flabbergasted with the scale it got to! and now my sister is even saying to me just because no one took my corner i went on and on.

as i said to her i am just stating a fact. granted a few selected words were put in i.e pigheaded men driving over priced tin cans...was thrown in... lol

i know this argument will never end but how they took it was beyond belief! and im getting personal! LOL just said perhaps he should have thought of the people he was insulting in the 1st place being there are no bridle way saround my area, and the ones that are you have to go on main roads to get there.... I never thought i would hear my self say this, but the non horsy world is starting to get on my nerves!
 
Yikes, that is a bit scary! Some people seem to have a massive issue with non car users being on the road at all, and seem to go out of their way to be arses to any cyclist/walker or rider they come across. God knows what their problem is!! Tbf though some people I come across could do alot to help their cause, a hand raised in thanks for you waiting and passing slowly, (or even a nod if you dare not take a hand of the reins!) whether cyclist or horse rider, does the sports PR the world of good!
 
From the debate which spanned both HHO and pistonheads regarding a lad in a sportscar the drivers on pistonheads commented that the speed drivers go round blind bends (within the speed limit!) should be dictated by the distance ahead they can see so that they are able to stop safely should they come across an obstruction.

I regularly ride on busy roads with blind bends and after seeing that picture of Rusty killed by an impatient driver am now concerned about the safety of continuing to do so, despite my horse being very good in traffic.
 
exacly christ we all have issues even us horse riders have things to say about the 'rude ones' and my pet hate is cyclits (sadly i am one of them most days as its pointless driving to work its so close) but i try stay of the road as much as i can, but the serious cylcists down our lane seem to want to have a head on with a car!

ive never met a rude one down our lane, the riders are courtyous and always seem to go out their way to smile and say thank you (mainly because both my car and partners car are modefied so pretty loud, we see horses, we both pull over and turn the car off) rather be late some where than early in the next life right?

i have to admit it was very insulting, especially my sister! she should know better but to take their side. it ended up being removed and i have blocked both those people because if i see any more posts or comments about it ill blow! the whole time i was being beaten down for having an oppinion against his...amazing stuff really lol!

this is exacly what i was trying to put accross to them! but some of us really dont have a choise, i will be driving my boys down lanes like this to get to the main roads, and i scares the hell out of me! which i said bluntly to them but they just put words in my mouth by the end.
 
Maybe you should copy them the link on another thread on here of that horrific accident. WhIlst maintaining that we have as much right as they do to be on the roads.

i saw a picture of her with a breif explination of it, that poor horse :( but theyjust said its 2012 horses shouldnt be on the road...

pah! maybe the council should build more bridle paths then and we wont! im sure many of us dislike confrontation when we want to go on a relaxing hack!
 
To be honest, I walk away from arguments like this, because people get so blinkered they won't ever be moved from accepting that we ALL have a right to be on the road.

I just block my ears to it, as it's more hassle than it's worth!

The fundamental point that they are missing is that roads are not just for cars; bikes, horses and people (if no pavement) are just as entitled to use them.

My main issue with the argument that horses shouldn't be on the road is that generally I would agree with it, but due to modernisation and urbanisation of the countryside riders are left with very little choice.

As the car has become more popular, tracks that would originally have been ridden on have turned into dangerous roads. At no point in this process did anyone stop to think that it would be a good idea to provide a suitable alternative for horses.

My main argument would be to these people would be that they need to drive at a speed that would allow them to deal with any oncoming hazard. Driving fast round a blind corner is driving da

Driving dangerously. As you will not be able to deal with a hazard - be it a horse, person, other car, flock of sheep etc.

Secondly if they are that bothered, go do something about it and campaign to provide safe alternatives for horses!!

What do these people expect horse riders to do?
 
Have you asked them what they think should be on the road, and where us mortals can apply for permission? I realise some drivers acquire road-ownership when they buy their car/obtain a driving license, but surely there's a specific form the rest of us can fill out allowing us partial use of their roads, perhaps between 0208 and 0214 on one day (to be allocated by road-owner) in every third week of the month? ;)

OP, I wouldn't engage in arguments with your family over this. A better, more stress-relieving course of action would be to point and laugh until your sides split. Mockery therapy ;)
 
I've been sucked into several arguments like that. More than once they have ended in death threats to me, the horses and my friends.
I try and argue from both sides (more hi-viz for riders, trying to ride off-road if possible, saying thank you, pulling into drive ways to let traffic past etc) but even then, some people just won't listen. It's people like them that really scare me when I'm on the roads.
If they were to hit you, you know they wouldn't care (might even brag to their friends, as my ex did when he hit and killed a deer).

im inclined to agree with you Dargon Slayer. It doesn't actually solve the problem by getting into a row and some people just will not be told.
 
I have also had this discussion on ocasssions and thh, the whole " I am equally entitled to be on the roads" never gets me very far. Me saying that the horse would probably die., possibly the rider and the car would most likely be written off has more impact.

Anyway I am used to contentious issues. ..I support hunting, am anti the capital punishment and go guns blazing at indiscriminate dog breeding. Riding on roads...pah! Small meat! and you should have been with me at a family lunch where the whole Wikipedia discussion came up..and yes my BIL suggested that as I didn't have friends in the secret service and was female, I didn't know was was best for me and the truth. He lost!
 
Well you know you are in the right so at least that should have some comfort!

When I was learning to drive I was told to aways be able to see the space I can stop in. I.e when going round a blind bend or whatever to be going at a speed where I can stop immediatly if need be.

I listened in my lessons obviously a lot of people don't! You never know what will be in your way, could be a tractor or a person or whatever.

The people you are trying to converse with are ignorant. They won't even listen to your point of view because they are narrow minded. All you can do is try and hope that something sinks in somewhere.
 
Unfortunately this is the problem faced by us all, whether its a horse, family out cycling, broken down car, farm vehicles pulling out etc etc... Fatalities, especially it seems this time of the year, are down to dangerous speeds and morons that quite frankly should not hold a licence.
We will never change the views of some and Im sure that they probably take the same view on other non-motorist road users as they do on horses as in their tiny minds 'They own the roads' - until of course they are involved in that fatality.
A system should be in place where reg no's can be reported - if they offend three times then a compulsory course on road safety.
If they saw some of the vehicles involved in fatalities close up believe me they would change their driving habits. I worked for many years for a recovery company where we stored such vehicles for police forensic and traffic investigators and it is one of the most unpleasant sights.
 
The one that gets me is "I pay road tax and horse riders don't" - well a lot of riders I know pay TWO lots of road tax (car & towing vehicle/lorry), does that mean we are twice as entitled? ;):D
