thats amazing, but i agree is any horse really worth that money!
it just goes to show how much money there is in riding as a profession! they must think she is going to win a lot to pay that!
Top international horses are so scarce in relation to how many horses there are that as a rare commodity they are obviously going to attract huge sums due to that rareness.
Still amazing though that given the economic situation of USA someone still feels able to morally spend that on a horse.
Im sure the "Ben Looney" will be posting on this any minute, also do you remember someone recently logging on as Ben and saying the horse wasnt sold. - Jokers.
I guess if someone will pay 4 million for an Arabian stallion that just 'looks pretty', 3.5 million for something competing at Olympic level with breeding possibilities and age on her side doesn't sound too silly really.
Well in all fairness she's a professional athlete, just like a footballer who are now sold for 10 times that amount...and as a lot of people have said, a horse is worth what someone is willing to pay.

At that price you're not looking to recoup your outlay in winnings....nor probably from breeding as it's a mare with a limited 'production line' (unless they go the surrogacy route
).
If you look at their website www.spycoastfarm.com you'll see they are VERY, VERY wealthy...and probably not averse to buying success
Their daughter is trained by Shane Sweetnam who will take over the ride on Rolette...but don't imagine they won't be viewing Olympic success for her at some point with the right backing and the right training.
Remember, Arko has only just won over the £1m...and that was with someone at the very top of the game riding him...so they aren't going to be expecting to win £3.5m I don't imagine.
A very quick google reveals that Robert Lourie (husband of the new owner) is a big Obama supporter...donating nearly $50k to the campaign this year...and he is very high up in a $29bn Hedge Fund called Renaissance Technologies...so Rolette is just wifey's hobby really

thats exactly my point! of course she isnt going win that much(or maybe she is but unlikely!) epecially when you look at arko, just like you said .
The world is full of very wealthy people and in the US there are plenty of wealthy patrons who get a tremendous kick from knowing they own an Olympic level horse. They don't necessarily want to ride it. There are also lots of yanks who will pay big bucks to have a foal from Rolette, and she can have loads of them by embryo transfer.
I don't know the woman's name, but there is a US heiress who routinely buys top class horses who are near the end of their competition lives and retire them to her "farm", she has top class race horses , jumpers, dressage horses.

I think on the North American circuit they can win huge amounts, at Spruce Meadows (Canada) they keep saying so and so who's won over X million dollars here [at Spruce Meadows], so maybe they will get their money back in winnings eventually?
and not as much money as alledgedly was paid for oki doki, latinus or all inclusive if the rumours are true and they have cahanged owners, if not riders. Ludger is still on his one but TBH you would want to have a horse with him if you were an owner in europe i should think.
as for new owners of Rolette, rambo is well on the case, but suffice to say if they had bought ten rolettes it wouldnt have touched the sides of the wallet though their farm in lexington is rather small and insignificant compared to some.....!!
still not as much and to be honest if rolette is worth 4 million euro's as a decent grand prix horse (all you can call her on her rocord so far) what would you have to pay for a real champion?
It will be interesting to see if she does anything with her new American rider or just goes to stud. It never ceases to amaze me that horses are sold "abroad" for huge sums and then just seem to disappear - take Escapado for example, never seen or heard again (or have I missed something?)

3.5 million pounds sterling is more than 4 million euros......

4 miilion euros is what Oki Doki was reputedly sold for about 4 years ago. I think Lucretia is implying he has been sold again since the Beijing Olympics along with All Inclusive and Lantinus ?

If you look at the Spy Coast Farm website you'll see a number of good european horses have been sold to themmmmainly by the Quigley's it seems. Don't be surprised if Rolette changes her name though too...
its been on here before rambo when the olympic doping scandal broke as allegedly it was the owners of latinus )based in switzerland/germany and loaded, sold him and bought the other two instead for 8 million of something (not sure which currency) and i dont know whether that was one or both or even neither. as i said Ludger is still riding his one, as far as i know neither of the others has been out (and i know that albert zoer has been injured and denis is serving his ban) so until they ar who knows. Albert Z told me himself at olympia when i interviewed him that he would never sell oki doki he had had him since he was five or something but there comes a point when you cant ignore the money.
what a great bit of business not only for the owner but also for Ben. well done guys!!
It is also good for the industry as it demonstrates that we still have the ability to export horses that can compete with the best that the rest of Europe can offer in Showjumping.
Ah I see, I thought the rumour was that Oki Doki had been sold recently for 4m euros, which I thought was slightly surprising in relation to Rolette's price tag (which is 4.45 million euros using today's exchange rate)
well eight million was the figure i heard but as i said i dont if that was for one or both and we may never know as obviously just cos they are sold does mean they get a new rider as well
oh and taking a leaf out of rambo's book i have been looking around the internet and i have heard the figure quoted for rolette is 3.5 million DOLLARS still a hefty amount but sounds more realistic to me. I appreiciate there is one born every minute but these people are business people and the figure quoted seems excessive in sterling considering what the horse has actually achieved. *Lucretia runs off to next lesson before being shot

Just did that - nothing much on there at all. Half a dozen brood mares, none of which I recognise, and only La Rumba (under "horses") has European breeding. Am I looking at the right website?
