Ive got a wow dressage saddle with deep seat and thought horse wouldnt jump again. Have been given go ahead to jump now by vet, but dont want to use anything but her wow due to behaviour issues with other saddles. I am umming and ahhing about whether to go for whole new wow jumping saddle with flatter seat or just the jumping flaps. Has anyone got any advice?

Seat shape doesnt really bother me as I always used to jump in deep seat although I understand its not as good as flat for cross country. Does it matter? I think Ill only be doing intro and pre novice.

Does anyone use one for eventing and change flaps between phases?

Also does anyone use the jumping flaps for everyday hacking out or cc rides etc? Are they comfortable over 10 mile distances?

Hi I regularly jump in mine with a deep seat and find it absolutely fine. I don't actually find it as deep as some saddles. I do mainly dressage and SJ though. I think it would only be a problem XC if your had to really lean back over a steep drop fence. My WOW is quite old and I only have 1 set of flaps which I can adjust from a forward jumping position to a dressage position but to be honest I always have it in the forward position for everything including dressage.
They are great saddles though aren't they - it made a massive difference to my horse too.

Wows standard deep seat isnt actually that deep in comparison with many saddles. They have, however, introduced a very deep seat recently which is extremely deep.

I have their standard deep seat with dressage fixed blocks and I jump fine in that. Im not sure Id fancy jumping in the very deep seat though.

I think it comes down to how much jumping you plan on doing and more to the point, what kind of height you plan on doing. Over small stuff, im sure you'll be fine with just a change of flaps. If you're aiming for bigger classes, then you might decide you need a flatter seat.

You could always get your local fitter out to slap some jumping flaps on the saddle for you and give it a go.

Thanks, I have tried jumping flaps with flat and deep seat-Seat as you say didnt seem to matter. I preferred jumping flaps to the GP ones as they were less bulky.
Its more to do with the ease of changing flaps between phases along with everything else I have to change.
Horse had ligament probs which have now settled so definitely not going to do big jumping. Just want to try again as she really is quite talented at CC and bought and bred to event. (And I wont sell her as shes too lovely!!!)

i have the deep seat and jump in it in no problem whatsoever.
im planning to continue PN this year so will be changing flaps between phases and iv had a practise at home and only takes 10 minutes...which hopefully will ge5t faster.
i personally prefer riding in the jumping flaps but maybe thats with my long legs!!

if i was you then i would just buy the flaps and if you dont get on surely you could buy a seperate seat etc? i cant see how that would be a problem

Well, if you have the money to buy a whole new saddle, then i'd go for that option

I know if I could, I would

So i suppose it comes down to that!

Thanks. Watched video!!! Nice horse!! As you say it doesnt look a problem at all. I was worried about drop fences but clearly that isnt a problem. And the jumps you were doing are much bigger than im going to do for a while. I think Ill try the flaps first, after all, that is the idea with the saddle isnt it!!!
Also if her legs dont hold up I havent spent a fortune.

Big thankyou!!!

yeh i guess thatsa good point tierra...it would be easier than chaning flaps..bit less hassle if you could afford another.

well i havent had mine for long....but as you are saying about her legs not holding up i would say go for flaps..otherwise you could be loseing a lot of money ad they dont seem to have a very high resale value atm.

Lazy? Perhaps... but arent we all?

The saddle is designed to be flexible in this way. I dont change the flaps on mine but Ive read a number of posts from people saying it takes them about 10 minutes after some practice.

I guess in the grand scheme of things 10 minutes isnt a lot... but IF you were switching flaps in between stages of an event for example, then I guess it could start to be a pain.

As i mentioned, I do jump my boy in his dressage saddle, but we dont do alot. Never the less, if at some point in the future I could afford a second saddle as a pure luxury, then I'd go for it and have a nice little flat seated wow jumping saddle!

The flaps are about £400 - £450 I believe? The new saddles are about £1400? If you've got a spare £1000 to throw at what will be a luxury, then I'd go for it. If not, then Im absolutly sure you will be fine with just a new set of flaps!

AAAAAHHHH!!!!! and I had just convinced myself to go for the flaps!!!My husband says the same as you! We havent got any kids so no-one to leave the dosh to so enjoy it while you can!!!Have it if you want it!!! Hes only saying that cos hes just bought ANOTHER car!!!! (Although I have told him it will be mine when it isnt broken anymore!!!)

If anyone does change between phases can they let me know how easy it is??
The trouble is I get nervous and like everythiing to be organised and in its place beforehand- bit of a control freak!!
Thats what puts me off having to change flaps.
