I just read in a magazine of mine theres a new body protector out, Theres a cord that connects with the saddle and as soon as that cord is removed, the body protector enlarges like an air bag, Its a great idea but is £275.00. It is also reusable so as soon as you get back to the yard, you change the canister and its ready for use again.

I could have sooo much fun with that *evil laughter*

*considers its uses underwater*

Sounds unsafe to me!!! I don't want to be tied to my saddle? What if it doesn't release? Or I'm at a sj comp and she jumps bigger than expected and I'm thrown out the saddle a bit.... I don't want to swell up like a balloon! lol

I saw that but wouldnt the sound of the air scare the crap out of the horse!?! Then you might get trampled/kicked in its panic to get away so would defeat the object of the BP!

Hahaha! I was just thinking that. Ive spent a good half an hour being half projected into orbit this afternoon. That cord damn well better be a reasonable length cos i think there was a fair amount of air between myself and the saddle at times

And i know for a fact that if it made a funky noise when inflating, my horse would go mental. He didnt like having the flair in his saddle altered cos it made a tiny "pssssssssssssssssssssssssssst" kinda noise

i was involved in the testing of one, may be the same make. problem is, it makes a noise (like a gunshot, maybe not quite as loud) as it goes off. i was seriously worried that i'd come off, and the noise would make my horse bolt in panic.
maybe this one's quieter. which mag was it in, out of interest?
the one i tried has a lanyard (cord) which connects loosely to the saddle, so only detonates when it is pulled as you leave the saddle, no danger of you getting dragged along or anything.
it also goes very very tight as it detonates, enough to take your breath away! has great neck protection as well as torso protection.

I read an account from someone who tested one of these when they were being developed. I was practically wetting myself with laughter as she described having come off in it and rolling aound on the ground like a stranded beetle, with her horse spooking more at the hissing sound of the air in it ROFL! She described being unable to get up and she lay in the very comfy bit airbag - she eventually managed by repeatedly rolling herself until she managed to roll over. Her horse then wouldn't come anywhere near her as she waddled towards him like a telly tubby

It worked though as she said it was like sailing through the air and landing on duvets!

If your friend couldn't get up, couldn't this be a problem? I read the magazine article on this too and understand it deflates after 10 seconds. But what happens if you fall and you see your horse coming down near you as well! You want to be able to roll out of the way etc. if need be! And that'd all happen well within 10 seconds thats for sure...

It wasn't a friend, just someone who wrote an article I read. She couldn't get up due to the big inflated thing she was wearing, not due to injury. Clearly it didn't deflate after 10 seconds. As she walked towards her horse, it was still inflated and hissing! - hence exiting horse! I think she was testing the prototype though!

that doesn't sound like the one i tested. it wasn't big, it was very very solid when inflated, would have been no problem to get up (although it was 'detonated' on me while standing up, no horse in sight thank goodness!)
