I haven't been happy with how my horse J has been going under saddle for a while. He has been really hard to get working into a contact, behind the bridle/leg but then rushing and false outline when I ask him to move forwards, reluctant to stretch and stiff. Jumping he has started rushing his jumps. He has gone from late 60's/70% dressage to struggling to get 60%. His jumping rounds have been getting messy, flying at the fences then chipping in tiny strides, still going clear and getting placed but I was getting vibes that he was unsure, just doing it because I asked him. Normally he feels like he would take on the world when he jumps!

I freaked out thinking it was me, then I thought he was broken and was about to call the vet. I haven't been happy with his saddle for a while. It was so tight on him I couldn't get my hand under the front and he was getting soft lumps over his withers when I took it off. I got fed up of saddlers telling me it fitted when I was conviced it didn't.

I bought two saddles myself over the internet. Kieffers with the standard tree which I think is a lovely old fashioned design with a really cut back head, perfect for TB's with high withers, curved backs and big shoulders. Both saddles fit a dream, they are off his withers, right back from his shoulders and suddenly he can move! I also never realised just how long his neck was!

I then put him on Superflex. He was broken to race at 2 and although he only raced once he has always been prone to coming out of his stable a bit stiff so I thought it couldn't hurt.

OMG the difference. I could cry with happiness at how he now feels to ride but I'm also appalled at how much he must have been struggling. I thought I was a rubbish rider, I used to feel like I was pulling and jerking and kicking. Now I don't have to do anything! I just sit there! He is round, soft and supple. He is dead even in both reins, straight, secure and spongy in my hand. I can flex him left and right and his body flows from one direction to the other like he is made of rubber. He is like a different horse. I probably sound crazy but I am so relieved and he gets better and better every day.

I'm so glad I followed my instinct. Two such simple things have made the hugest difference and I have saved so much money buying the saddles second hand! They are both nearly new and cost less then 50% of the rrp. The superflex, goodness knows what is in that stuff but whatever it is obviously suits him.

So happy! Thought i'd share in case anyone else finds this useful.

The second thing is for personal reasons I need to find someone good to come and jump him at our yard for me every other week as I am unable to do it. Of course I would pay. I'm very precious over his jumping as he is such a dude at it but also he has lost a bit of confidence inside from being sore and I would like someone quite, sympathetic and professional. It's more to keep him ticking over. Maybe do the odd sj show in the new year, event or whatever or maybe not I don't mind. We are in Hampshire just over the surrey border, so if anyone has a bit of free time or knows of someone that would suit please let me know. :)

Glad to hear it's made such a difference!

It's interesting about the supplement, I've been thinking about putting my ex-racer on one. He's having the winter off and is still young but does seem to be very slow coming out of his stable in a morning, he is pretty idle and laid back so was wondering if it was just his personality but maybe not... he was also raced from 3 and did the 2 yr old sprint sales(no idea what proper name is!) so maybe something would help him...

Thanks for posting

JVB - your ex racehorse will be microchipped as all racehorses have been since I think 1999 - next time he has his injections or a vet visit, see if they have a scanner they can check his microchip number with. You can then find out who is really is.

Firewell - really good news.

Great news. really interested re the Superflex just starting Sarnie on a trial tub after doing a huge amount of research and feeling that is one of the top joint supplemens available.

No not a HM saddle, it's a Silhouette event saddle, basically a GP but with big knee rolls. It was sold brand new to me 18 months ago and it is far, far to wide and just totally the wrong saddle for a TB! Because it was too wide it was pressing down so horribly on him, it would also slip to the side on his back. Nightmare. It's a lovely saddle just wrong for the horse. Can't believe I used it for as long as I did but it's very hard when a professional tells you something is fine.

Sarah-Jane I'll be interested to hear what you think of it. I've always thought my horse would be a candidate for a joint supplement, because of his racing background but have been reluctant to try one. Iv'e been of the school of thought that supplements are placebo's thinking that surely something that really works would only be available by prescription. I'm happily proved wrong though! I'm sure every horse is different but it seems to have made a massive difference to my chap. After loading it only costs £20 a month, to have the horse I rode this morning it is cheap at the price!

oops confusions - I do have his name, just wasn't sure of what they call the sale when buyers can see them do a sprint at 2 yrs before buying them - thanks tho

What a fantastic breakthrough! Very pleased to hear you have a happy Jae again :) Goes to show what an absolute poppet he was when he was in discomfort ... if only they could talk

It might be worth me trying the Superflex on my little Billykins too so thank you very much for sharing!

I live on Hampshire / Surrey borders... and am exceptionally fond of Jae. PM me if you like :)

Very pleased for you. I feel your pain re saddle woes as I have been there myself and to a certain extent we are still a work in progress. Slightly wonky rider with poor core strenght, slightly wonky horse with uneven muscle due to poor saddle fit previously (!!) but we are getting there....

As an aside, I think you are quite close to me (horses are in Standford / Passfield)...do you know of anyone who hires out their school for flatwork and / or jumping? And who would you recommend for lessons locally? Is there anyone within hacking distance?

Although I have lived in the area a while the horses have not been there that long and I'm still getting to know stuff.....

Really pleased to hear you've had this break through! Good on you for trusting your instinct. I wonder if its actually just the saddle making the difference and a coincidence with the supaflex? I guess we'll never know!

:) Thanks for the replies! Suzi apart from the obvious places like Merrist Wood and Crofton Manor i'm not sure about arenas... There is a yard near Droxford, Lower Peak Farm that hire out their arena as my Riding club use it. It'll be about 45 mins from you... otherwise might be an idea to ring around the local yards and ask. Lessons I will PM you as there are a couple of people I would recommend :).

Supernova I'm not quite sure lol. I was using the saddles last week and he was feeling so much better but he feels amazing this week after the superflex. Who knows! Will be interesting to see how he progresses and i'm yet to study him on the lunge! I love to study and obsess about how he moves on the lunge :p.

Lex will PM you

Glad he's feeling so much better!

For riders, could you contact local PCs? I know if you lived round us, Al would be very keen, as would 2 others I can think of who'd be recommended and we're hardly a big-time branch...
