My youngster is starting unaffiliated tests. We've done walk/trot and now have to brave the canter ones.

We have difficulty with the left canter lead. If she gets the wrong lead during the test, should I continue in counter canter (which she's amazingly good at) or go back to trot and keep trying until I get the correct lead?

What would a judge expect me to do in this situation?

Bring her back to trot and ask again until you get the correct lead

What DG2007 said! Even if you don't end up cantering at all it's better than carrying round on the wrong leg

My mare used to be 50/50 whether we'd get the right lead, and I think I still managed to get marked with a 5 for our 20m circle, despite only cantering about a quarter of it on the correct lead

I would think that wrong lead would get a 4 (insufficient) or less. If you can get the correct lead and show some decent canter strides you might get a five for the canter, but if you continue in counter canter you wouldn't get more than an insufficient as you are not showing what is required on the test sheet.

At prelim level if you continue on the wrong lead in a sort of 'counter canter' it will be assumed by the judge that you have not recognised that you are on the wrong lead, you'll get better marks for completing the movement on the correct leg. Good luck and have fun!

Agree go back to trot. A friend once canter a 20m circle on the wrong lead and she got a 0. Thought that was a bit harsh, but the test said left canter adn she was in right.
