Hi Everyone,
Mince pies all round (warmed up with cream if you get to the end!)
Back ground! Pony is 14.1hh bum high just 4 year old Welsh D. Bought as a 2 year old in VERY poor condition and still a colt.
Gelded at 2.5 He is in good condition, but not fat and is still quite immature physically. is on alternate days turnout in winter, been in this routine a month so far. eats non molassed straw chaff, speedy beet, blue chip feed balacer twice a day with ad lib good quality hay.
he was backed lightly in august this year immediately turned away after the 4 weeks, his saddle was a used saddle but fitted by a master saddler for him to go to the trainer with, the plan was to re fit or swap once he was in full ridden work, due to the saddler advising he needed to mature as he was a bit immature to carry me (taken as a massive insult but thats another story) so I decided to turn him away until summer next year and see if he grows on and matures any. he was checked by a physio before and after his backing (if you cant tell im paranoid about back damage!) with no problems reported.
he saw a dentist 4 weeks ago with the rest of the yard, with no treatment needed. he is wormed and trimmed regularly.
Problem!
January this year his stifles became sticky although did not fully lock. My vet (of ten years who I trust and who is very well respected) was not worried and suggested he was having a growth spurt and it was common in the breed and he would grow out of it.
Fast forward to Monday this week, nearside hind fetlock was stiff and sticky, walked out and improved. yesterday morning was very stiff and sticky in the stifles and fetlocks, walked out with improvement, vet came early evening and problem was nowhere to be seen, Vet did very thorough check, commented on how bum high he was again and said he was probably having a big growth spurt and not to worry about it and seemed wholly unconcerned.
I just feel this isnt right at all, ive never known any other youngsters to go through this kind of thing during growth spurts or maybe other welsh owners could correct me if Im wrong?? Maybe a second opinion is in order? X-rays? I did suggest this she just said he isnt showing any pain or swelling or pulses and to give him the time if it persists then we would look closer but I want to know what the matter is!
I think an awful lot of this pony and im just losing sleep!
Mince pies anyone?
