If you want a last ditch attempt, it’s not really out of the box, then I’d give him to a pro for a month and see what he does with them. You would want to pick carefully and find someone who would balance trying to get him going versus not bullying the living daylights out of him, with an honest appraisal at the end.

It might well be he would prefer a different job.
