wrong leg in canter

My cob is striking off on the wrong leg in canter on the right rein when ridden. He is fine on the lunge.

He is also hanging on to the right rein and no amount of pushing him onto the ouside rein is working.

Teeth being checked next week. Back checked and fine.

Has this ever happened to you?

I'm gutted as we want to do a dressage test soon
 
ok, similar problems a couple of years back, my boys was initiated by a pelvis problem but took some time to get him back schooling again (was right rein) he was not ok on the lunge in the first instance. but was ok if he was jumping.

Firstly try not to get frustrated with it, it will only make it worse as you will be getting angsty about it, tensing and making life hard for him.

It took a couple of months to sort Frank out again. We only asked for a canter trans if everything was good to limit the chances of a wrong strike off as I think the more they strike off wrong the more it can become normal to them. If he strikes off wrong pull up right away so he knows that wasn't what you wanted. I also had an excellent instructor who really helped and would tell me when exactly would be a good time to ask.

Also if you are asking in a corner be careful not to overbend him too much to the inside. If you apply some counter flexion at the point of askin it can mean that you create some space for the inside shoulder to move into otherwise they can get very scrunched up.

Be patient it will take time.

Have you tried using a pole on the floor or a very small cross pole to get the right lead by asking for canter over the pole, or even a line of poles. If he is ok on the lunge it might be worth getting someone to lunge you on him too and see if that makes a difference.
 
Maybe get some lessons, if he isnt doing it on the lunge, it must be something your doing wrong, not him. Someone watching from the ground could help you?
 
I'm sure it is something i'm doing as he really does lean on the inside rein when we are on the right rein. Left canter is lovely but the rein he is leaning on is my outside rein so i can drop it completely.

On the right rein, if i drop my inside rein he wanders all over the place.

Could him leaning on the right rein have something to do with him going on the wrong leg leg on the right rein?
 
had same problem with my pony and had chiro out and same as ester my horses pelvis was misalined.
 
try trotting a 20m circle, once yu have the circle nice and established then ask for canter, horses find it easier to get the right leg when on a circle i use this exercise when teaching young horses to canter

I had trouble with my horse changing legs on right leg to left leg. Finally worked out it was how I was sitting. Due to my previous back injuries I am wonky and this affects horse. I have to consciously push more weight on to right seat bone and think of turning to right then horse doesn't even consider cantering on other leg. If horse does it on lunge then its most likely your riding causing problem. With the hanging on one rein make sure you don't have a stronger contact on one that rein. Try using legs to keep horse straight rather than reins. Hope that helps.

friend rode him - he was on the wrong leg again.

I really don't know what to do
 
Get back checked out, my horse had canter problems initially only when ridden, he turned out to have kissing spines.

when you say back was checked who checked it, what profession were they? I suspect that this is the root of the problem.
 
Mine also goes off on the wrong leg in canter on the right rein, not all the time but most of it. Have had lessons, initially put it down to him being a bit green. But we're being x rayed for kissing spines today
