WTF (who are these weirdos)

Are there any positive reasons why anyone would want to own a husky!?
Not being critical, just quite interested in the attraction of such a breed.

Unfortunately (as I have recently seen with a friend) they are such 'cute, ickle puppies, and are beautiful dogs and have lovely eyes' and 'as long as you get a puppy you can mould it to how you want it' is a common attitude and not a good one. :(

I'm sure huskys make wonderful dogs - if you're prepared for what owning them entails and I think the average first time dog owner often doesn't appreciate this. Those that do love their huskys seem to 'collect' them though :D so there must be something addictive about them!

I have malamutes, and no, there aren't a lot of positives :D They, like huskies, are hard work, stubborn and easily bored. They can be destructive, very high energy, shed fur everywhere, and will run off at a moments notice (or even less); They need to be worked, for their, and your, mental and physical wellbeing - I would never recommend them to a non working home, BUT....

I have always wanted mals, love them; they are a challenging breed and I certainly wouldn't recommend them. I Spent years, literally, searching for a good breeder, who bred for temperament, and the only reason we found the breeder we did (one of the most knowedgable in the breed), was due to us meeting some mushers in our local forest whilst walking our samoyeds, and 'getting in' with them.

They put us through the wringer though - feeding, handling, harnessing etc their pack of sibes, before we could even speak to the breeder!
Then we had to wait a further 3 years before she bred a litter.

But, by god, they were worth it. Fantastic dogs, really hard workers, and great fun to be around. I always wanted to run the Iditarod, and the Yukon Quest, I know now this will not happen :( but running my team of two mals gives us all such pleasure, I don't care. We spend hours just watching them, their interactions with my samoyed, with each other and with us.

Yes, they look a bit wolfy, and yes, they are adorable as pups, and that is the breeds downfall - so many in rescue. But I love our guys.

I own MJs furkids Aunty from the same*breeder and fully agree with the onlead rule, Loco does get to go off but only in places I know are secure and she can't get away from me.
Its a lot easier to get a malamute puppy now than it used to be even compared to the nearly 6 years ago I brought madam home like MJ I loved the breed for a good 5 years before I got my girl but knew the pitfalls of the breed such as the same sex aggression so I went out of my way to look for a breeder whp bred for temperament as well as the working ability lots of research of bloodlines and meeting different dogs and their owners at rallies etc everything pointed back to this breeder and shes a woman I can now class as a very good friend.
And just because I love showing her off

At 4 weeks old when we first met

At about a year old at her first Aviemore(biggest rally in the UK and and an annual pilgrimage for most that work their dogs in this country)

Awwwwwwww :D If only it was acceptable to choose dogs based on cuteness factor! I'd never have them myself as it wouldn't be fair on them, but oh how lovely...
