I agree with others that if you really love the horse, then perhaps offer to help with the rehab and care during rehab for free. If the owner wants you to continue paying, then that really is taking the mick. There's also no way she will find anyone else to do rehab and pay a contribution! And of course there's no guarantee there will be a ridden horse at the end of this!

If you are going home in May anyway, then maybe it makes sense to end the share early- it'll give you a bit more time to focus on exams etc too!

thank you all for the replies — i didn’t expect so many responses at all and it’s been lovely!

you’ve all definitely affirmed what i was already thinking, i’ve never been on the other end of the situation so really just needed a bit of assurance that i wasn’t somehow breaking some unspoken rule! plus as a positive, i doubt i’ll look to find another loan horse as i’ve only got a few months left of the semester before i go home for summer, so it’ll definitely be nice to have some spare pennies in the bank!!

If I was the owner of the horse I would be immensely grateful that my sharer offered to help with the rehab, and would certainly not be expectling a financial contribution.

Edited to add that you should not allow yourself to be bullied by the owner. I am guessing that you are somewhat younger than they are, and they may try to make you feel bad about ending the arrangement. Just stay calm and polite, if they get angry with you then you can simply tell them that you are sorry that they are upset, but the reason that you loaned rather than purchased was because you did not want responsibilities in case of such a situation. Do not be afraid of politely ending the conversation and leaving if necessary. If they were ending the loan because of moving away or a change in circumstance they would not think twice, so you have nothing to feel bad about.
