WWYD...BE membership dilemma!!

Hi all,

Firstly just to say a quick hi - I'm definitely a lurker! ;-) and v rarely post but I could really use some impartial advice on what you knowledgable HHO folk would do in my place.

I have a very lovely KWPN x ISH who has just had his 9th bday - he is 17hh give or take & it's safe to say he's taken a long time to 'grow into himself'...in every sense of the phrase!!! This year *touch wood* the penny seems to have dropped & he's really getting this eventing malarkey :-) at 7 he won the Mkec 3 day (class 1), & last year he was 2nd in class 2, but for one reason or another (weather, work, lameness etc) we've never managed a BE season.

So far this year we've ran on day tickets at MK1 & Ascott under Wychwood at BE90, gaining 32d/c & 33d/c respectively, and on sat he won his first go at BE100 level at our riding club areas :-) I'm using day ticket 3 at MK2 next week for the 100 - fingers crossed!

So would you...

A) bite the bullet, crack on & join BE now - half year for him, full year for me, but both class as 'renewals' as have already competed this season, so will save a few pennies?

B) use up day tickets & stick at unaffiliated for the rest of the season, just to solidify his experience & keep the pressure off?

The issues I have with A) are potentially not enough events left/viable to fit in to justify the extra expense - still need to think of the entry/start/diesel costs etc!!! Plus you have ground conditions to factor in which may also result in lack of runs but never can predict...
B) is definitely doable with unaff events but leaves it more expensive for us to join BE at the start of next season & then we'll both be renewing together each year = more pennies!!

Sorry for rambling, just interested to hear some opinions if anybody's had similar experiences???

Gluten free cake on offer for advice, I'd say it's yummy, but I'd be lying!! :-)
 
I must admit that I have decided to just stick to day tickets this year and go for full membership next year.

The only real benefit of full membership that i can make out is you can do more than 4 in one season and you get slight priority over day ticket people for heavily subscribed events (for me in norfolk this isnt really a problem!)

I have decided to just do my 4, and then go to as many unaffilliated events that are run over BE courses as I can fit in, just so Ive had the exposure.

However, saying that- you and your horse seem to be doing very well and more competitive than me and my green-monster so maybe it would be worth it in your case!

Its a lot of money though! :o
 
Thanks for your reply - I definitely agree about the pennies!!!

This is the first season where I've really considered it as I think he can hopefully just move on now, but I am still leaning towards caution as I'm so used to doing that with him!! If I could just have a couple more day tickets I would be happy - 4 is just not quite enough!
 
Horse can have any number of day tickets I think, so why not join yourself and keep on with day tickets for horse and then join horse next year and your renewal will be summer so spread out.
 
As someone said, join yourself and stay on day tickets for horse. Don't think you will be a renew membership as you are not renewing a full membership you have just used day tickets.

Do join though, I love BE and you sound in a very good position to be competitive.
 
Ahhhhh I thought there might have been some kind of rule like that for horses but couldn't remember....that could definitely be a happy halfway option :-) thank you!
 
I say just go for it and register. You never know what the future holds and if you have a horse who is sound, well and enjoying it you might as well do it whilst you can :)

That's very good advice, figure if I spend my time holding back wondering 'what if he goes lame...what if the ground gets too hard..etc' then I'll never actually get anywhere right?! :-)
