Irrespective of whether you think he's worth the money she's asking (and you've sat your children on an unbroken ponies back and he hasn't tried to launch them into orbit...) you should have had his teeth checked before you put a bit anywhere near his mouth. Just because you don't own him does not make you exempt from his routine needs, you knew the costs of upkeep when you took him on loan, therefore you can't complain that you'd have spent x amount after the sale price as that's an amount you should have been paying regardless.
