WWYD: Dog bites child

Wow I will reiterate an earlier comment - I am amazed how many people haven't actually the OP properly, the child didn't approach the dog at all :)

Having said that, i wouldn't have expected the small child to approach the lady who was petting the other dog. She might not like children, same as the JRT type.

To be honest this just sounds like a rather unfortunate incident to me, although admittedly one with a good dose of luck that the bite didn't cause any damage. Obviously a dog prone to aggression should not be tied up in public, but for all we know the dog has never shown such behaviour before. (Yes I know people always say "oh but he's NEVER done that before" but it often is the case). Is the child quite upset by what happened?

Fortunately child looked a bit shocked then pulled a cross face at the JRT and moved on with life and is still fine with all other dogs. Resilient like me :-)

To those complaining about lack of supervision... to be clear
* only stall holders are allowed to bring dogs onto this show ground (so I KNEW dog belonged to someone there to profit from selling things (which came in child sizes too) from their stall where the dogs where staked
* child was being looked at constantly, in close physical proximity and doing exactly what trained to so in no sense 'unsupervised'. I was asking for advice about how to make new (pragmatic and not overly dramatic) rules for the child/what ppl wd do with the dog on the spot/what to have said to stall holder when she appeared. Child is sensible, (for age) well behaved and much more polite than most of the people on this forum, including me!
* we were in a large pedestrian shopping area together so there was no 'danger' from either 'strange' adults, traffic or horses etc.

If someone (especially someone running a stall at a public event) doesn't like being spoken to by children then I'm sure there are therapy sessions or similar they can go to... Just like puppy training is largely about socialisation through controlled exposure perhaps they could get a friend/neighbour/family member with a not too intimidating child to spend some time with them? ;-)

Sheesh.

I wouldn't be offended in the least - I would be horrified! Children are like cats, they gravitate towards people they know are scared of them or don't like them particularly.... and since it is necessary to explain everything in the nth detail on this forum, of course I don't dislike an unknown child, I dislike the principle of small children because I don't have my own & have never wanted them

OMG! This is me!!! I just don't know how to interact with small children and I find them a bit irritating TBH!!

They are just shorter less experienced people really. Like the bigger ones some are smarter and nicer than others. Some one clicks with, some one doesn't.
