Our 8 yr old appy gelding has developed a big confidence issue out hacking.
He was backed using the TRT Method in a feild in the middle of woods and was hacking all over on his own up till he moved yards.

He has been to the beach, miles round woods, dogs come up barking and other things and did not bat an eye.

Moved yards twice in three weeks due the first yard closing and an issue with another livery and then due to being beaten up in the feild at the first yard he moved to.

He is now with me and mine, has been here a year and a half.
Lost a load of weight and was treated for ulcers due to the stress he was under. Went from being a bomb proof allround solid lad to a nervous reck and he had to learn how to be stabled due to being on grass livery his whole life.

He has come on in leaps and bounds, will now lay down and sleep in his stable were as before he wouldnt and would nearly fall over due to exhaustion.

Leading to and from the feild is now spot on, he is happy in the school after being petrifried. Can long rein round all the feilds etc.

Its just under saddle that we have issues out hacking, school ridden work is fine.

He will be fine walking past scary stuff, geese, pigs screaming at feeding time, bird scarer going off right next to him and just shot forward a few steps and stopped.

But he randomly starts jogging, gets agitated and just tenses up. No reason we can see for this to start happening and no amount of turning, patting, encouragement etc will settle him. And she ends up getting off as doesnt get sick pay and doesnt want to push him into doing something out of fear. But getting off doesnt actually calm him down its just safer on the ground. Working through ground work patterns does settle him until she gets back on again and he goes back to being tense and its like he has lost his comfort blanket.

We have come to the conclusion he needs a pro to work with him, we are wanting to send him away as think it will be good for him to see a bit more of the world while learning relax again out hacking.

He does have seperation anxiety with his herd horses which at the moment is just my gelding so this hopefully will be sorted with.

So our options are below, which ones would you go for.

Option one send to one of the below for 6-8 weeks or longer if needed.

Miri Hackett (Also does TRT which he is familer with)
Joe Midgley - have seen AmbersEcho posts on him
Connie Coldfox
Kate Davis
Sophie Seymour
Or anyone else you can recommend for the above issues. No one who is heavy handed, he is not a nasty horse he has just lost his confidence in a big way which has caused my sister to loose her confidence and she works long hours and battles with generalised anxiety disorder so not being able to help him is stressing her out.

Option two

Turn away for a year to decompress and bring back into work next year.

He will have a vet check including back xrays in the next two weeks before he goes away.
We are based in the Milton Keynes area if anyone can recommend anyone locally.

So he isnt actually doing anything dangerous, just tensing up and jogging?

Sounds like he just needs to hack miles and miles everyday to me. Preferably with a sensible companion for now.

I wouldn't send him away, as moving seems to be the root of his problems. Does he regularly hack with a companion?
I would certainly have a thorough vet check and address any issues found but if your horse is his comfort blanket, I would use that fact to support him and work on the separation anxiety later.

Just answering a few questions

We are on a big livery yard not just the two of us.

He can be the same or fine in company. Three weeks ago he had a really good hack on his own round three feilds, then went bad again.

We have someone confident riding him, he is the same.

We are both in our 30s so are adults, have retrained a ex race horse on this yard and carried on the training of mine when he came back from being backed, horse is 16.1ish

Jogging and tensing up can also lead to sideways leaping and curling up (sorry trying to remember everything 🤦‍♀️)

Saddle is checked every 3/6 months, is fine in the school bareback but dont want to try hacking bareback.

Has done ride and lead his entire ridden life and is fine with it. Have done it here and he is a mix of fine and tense.

I would have the vet check and get a 2nd opinion on the tack fit. Maybe a 2nd dentist opinion too.

This is a new saddle and new saddler, goes brilliantly in it and opened up his shoulder.

We have no ridden issues in the school, can work lovely and free flowing its just out hacking.

your say the rider suffers anxiety, could they be sending vibes telling the horse the wrong message, (based on riders anticipation of previous tension}

Yes and no. We have a local freelancer riding him and she has had the sams issues with him out hacking.

Its one of the reasons after he has had a clear vet check (fingers crossed) that she thought about him going away as he would be ridden by a confident person.

Up until his move he was literally hacking on the buckle for miles, not a care in the world and its heartbreaking to see him so upset. But we do get odd times of him being back to his normal self.

Going to look at PSSM testing as well he should be neg for type one as his parents ars but we are unsure on doing the type two as its not validated etc.

I also thought about the 5 panel test as well while we are at it.

thats the first thing i would do, as well as most of other suggestions, but it can make them over reactive , emotional

If he was fine until moving here, and if it isn't complicated by it being your place, I would simply try moving him.

Some horses don't settle in some yards.

Even if it is just temporary, it would be information, especially if he got better then reverted once back home.

I would also try changing stables within the same yard.

I would also have a careful look at who handles him and when.

Thats why we thought of using moving him/sending away to try and see if it settles both issues.

We are on diy, summer i bring in the the morning and and we both sort them in the eve. Dad also handles him. On the ground he is fine in and out etc.

We are asking for when a new stable comes up can we move him. He was in a smaller barn but was.moved to the main yard when we caughy him nearlh falling over on camera. He wasn't sleeping in a the smaller barn but being in the middle of the main barn with lots of horses around him he settled well.

Is someone else slipping him treats? I've had three appys and while one could eat virtually anything, the other two were/ are very food sensitive, which translated to very spooky behaviour. I also would only move him, if you move with him, our first appy was awful in the first yard we had her at, moved her and moved with her and she settled fine.

No, no one at our yard feeds other peoples horses unless asked.

He is our 5th appy so know the breed.

Its just getting him confident out hacking and it being consistant as he used to do it all.

Can you get a pro rider to work at your yard? Instead of sending him somewhere new again and at the same time give you help when your riding him?

Re the curling up, mine used to do that and bounce on the spot, very unnerving. I had a bit and bridle last out and replaced both and has made a huge difference. Just a thought

Had that done too and its all sorted and goes lovely in it. He is in a NS Team up.
