Apologies in advance for rambling.

I have been offered a fantastic job in London. However my horse is the main thing stopping me from taking it. I couldn't bring her with me as it will be long hours and I couldn't afford livery.

She is very high maintenance and I don't want to sell or loan. I worry about if she would be looked after properly and if ailments would be noticed if she was on livery.

Has anyone else let there horse hold them back career-wise and did you regret it? Or vice versa?

I love my horsey life and not sure how I will cope in the city at all. I have also never intended to be a 'career-woman' but this an opportunity to give great experience.

Any advice/experience appreciated.

I am not sure how helpful this will be but in my case I chose horse. I have a professional career but outside London. I do have to work in London every few weeks and I would have a better career if I worked there full time. However I am not that career minded so it is an easy choice.

Playing devil's advocate here.

Are you sure it's just the horse holding you back and you're not using her as an excuse because you're not sure about the move to London? Are you happy with your life and job where you are now? Would this new job make you happier - enough to make the lack of a horsey life worth it?

There's nothing wrong with not wanting the job. Having a great job but being miserable for the rest of the time won't make you happy overall.

If you really do want the job, you'll find a way to make it work. There are great livery yards out there which will look after her as well as you do. I know we all believe nobody will look after them as well as we do, but they will!

Maybe you could have your mare at full livery somewhere outside London that is commutable by train? That way, you could keep your horse check on her/ride at the weekends. Not an ideal scenario but, at least that way, you could get the job and keep your horse. Good luck, whatever you decide!

By the sounds of it, you don't want this job long term anyway, even if you do take it? Make sure it is not anything else holding you back, that maybe you are pinning on your horse. Wouldn't blame you- I am not a London girl at all, and although I am career minded it takes alot for me to consider job changes- my horse would be one of those focuses!

Have a look for a yard outside of London which is commutable by train, that can offer full or part livery- that way you can ensure your mare is kept to your standards and requirements, but by being part or full it takes some of the pressure of you to be there morning and night. If it is only going to be short term (i.e 1-2 years), it means you get to keep your horse, plus you always have her should you wish to change jobs or move back home!

There are people who can support your high maitenance horse and her ailments. I know it is hard to sometimes let go and trust people- but there are plenty of good horse people out there!

I definitely see my job as a way to enjoy my expensive hobby!! My family and friends have accepted that I am more than content not to further my career prospects so that I can spend more time with my horses. Everyone ticks differently, and whereas I can't understand why people in my profession (nursing), would want to move up the career ladder and deal with all the extra grief that comes with it, others thrive on it.
