In the position at the moment where we can't turnout :( don't know for how much longer! I'm making use of horse walker to keep them from going mental but what else can I do? There are 15 so lead outs not really suitable

is there an arena they could be turned out in in small groups with some piles of hay? At least then they would get some horsey interaction time and the chance to stretch their legs and have a roll.

Also I find freeschooling is a good way of getting them to burn off energy when stuck in - my boy loves a good canter and a buck around when he's been cooped up :)

Its work, my horses r there, been a delay in redoing fencing that was taken down and othet fields need serious tlc!

I can't imagine not being able to turn out :-( it must be driving you & your horses mad.

Do you have a fenced school? Could you turn out individually or in pairs so they could at least roll & groom.

Long, slow hacks, riding & leading so at least they are getting plenty of leg stretching.

Good luck, hope that you can turn out soon.

No, but this isn't a regular thing its short term, why would I move from excellent facillities to a crap livery yard? I was just asking for any ideas for a short term fix? If this was gonna go on over 6 months I'd look else where but its been 6days so far and sheep are turned out sorting fields!

I'd be going absolutely bonkers at the person in charge of fencing and get them to do it IMMEDIATELY. If that's not possible, I'd be rigging up electric fencing so that they can get out.

Ah, well you didn't say any of that in your original post. Although I take issue with the crap livery yard comment (perhaps glass houses and all that:rolleyes:)

Sheep won't sort out the fields, maintenance will. So hopefully the yard owners will get their tractors, harrow, toppers and rollers out and ensure the fields are once again habitable.

And fingers for you that your poor horses won't be stuck in for much longer.

But as an alternative, I would simply ride and lead every day to ensure they had a good couple of hours exercise.

Put up electric fencing while I repaired the proper fencing myself if needs be. If I had to I would even conjure something up to watch them for a 10 min roll & stretch. Plus ride & lead. 15 horses is only 8 to ride. Could do half an hour with each pair minimum a day.

Alf loves his stable and doesn't care if he doesn't go out - but I make sure he gets out and about several times a day when he can't go in the field. Handgrazing, spin round on the lunge, free schooling, hacking out for longer - there's plenty you can do.

Sorry Amymay, I meant the ones that I could have space on round here I wouldn't go 2! The lovely yards have no space!!

Ride and lead is good but there are 3 that can be ridden plus 2 naughty tbs who r unridden and rest are ponies or minis so prob won't risk that haha! I should explain more but typing it on phone is a pain iin the butt!! I will rig up some tape but I'm so rubbish at it I will be posting about loose horses by the weekend!

Would excercise daily and perhaps turnout into the menage if you are allowed. Perhaps set up a routre with the other owners to ensure all Horses get a turnout slot.

If it were a long term problem I would move as my Horse simply couldn't survive without turnout.

I would be on to the manager daily until fencing was fixed though.

If sheep can be turned out, horses can surely? Sheep escape through far better fences than horses from my experience.

Personally I wouldn't be somewhere without a backup field :/ I don't like containing at all. However in the limit, get them into a school (in reasonable numbers dependant on the size) for some interaction and a run around. A horse walker doesn't give a horse opportunity to stretch his legs how he wants and rest his mind, it's work and shouldn't be treated as a horses own free time imo.

Not wishing to offend but how can putting up fencing be difficult?

1) Knock posts in
2) Thread tape from A to B on several levels.
3) Attach to energy source.

Sheep are out to eat crap before its topped, not ouyrs a local farmer! Omg u haven't offended me but my fencing is shocking!

'shocking' electric fencing is good:D:D:D:D

i am on a yard of over 50 horses, all our fencing has been replaced in the last 14 months (about 60acres). not one horse lost its turnout for more than a day and then they were turned out in the round pen and grazed in hand.

I dont understand why the sheep and horses cannot be out together, i would rather my horses were in a field with 'crap' in it than kept in.

i would not pay my bill whilst there is not grazing! or would expect the yard to cover the cost of hay and extra bedding whilst they cannot go out

If it was for a few days I would expect the YO to allow turnout in the school in appropriate sized groups. If it was longer I'd be very cross and would consider a move whether temporary or permanent, mine needs her turn out!

It is work and I run the yard :s

In that case it sounds like you need to figure out something before your customers start leaving then!

Probably best to either use your school and turn out in shifts so all the horses get an hour or two out or get the electric fencing up and make a couple of paddocks. Don't be surprised if you start getting clients asking for a discount if you don't sort something!

Horses can't go with sheep as farmer rounds up to count and check and I don't want them galloping about!

Priorities!

Sorry to be harsh but I'd have gone as soon I could arrange transport. Personally if the poo was an issue and harrowing was an option? Turnout during or after, no hassle. If not, then I'd have turned out with the sheep, sod the rounding up.

Who actually manages the land? I'm really puzzled by the sheep issue, tbh. I'd get them off now, top the field, and then get the horses off once you've collected the toppings.

Sheep eat short grass, so won't really have much affect if the land needs topping.
