I have just moved yards but am waiting for my final bill from the old one however while we were there I lost 3 rugs and a bridle so my question is would I be out of order to say I am not paying the bill because they owe me for my stuff? I dont like confrontation but feel like its out of order that I have to pay them and be out of pocket to replace stuff.

Only in order if you were the only person on the yard, other than the owners - or you have evidence that it was the yard owner that took them

Agree with only if you were on your own or a full livery. Otherwise I'm afraid its a case of owner beware and lock everything up if necessary!

You would definitely be out of order to refuse to pay unless you have solid evidence that they stole your things. We're you the only livery? Have you seen one of their horses wearing your bridle or rugs? If not, then you'll have to take the hit and be more careful in future.

it's your stuff so it was your responsibility to keep it safe and secure. no way would i go to a livery yard and blame them

As others have said, yes you would be totally out of line to withhold payment from the YO unless you know with certainty that the YO themselves have taken your items and even if you do know with certainty I think it would be incredibly hard to prove.

WOW do these things really happen on yards? and yet you all seem to take it in your stride, when I was on a yard many many years ago I had horse feed nicked but never rugs or a bridle.

Haha they do indeed. Currently I'm missing a saddle cloth, a mw turnout rug and my saddle cover went walkies on Sunday whilst I was out hacking :(

I don't think anyone is taking it in their stride, it must be really annoying, but people are simply saying its not the yard's fault (unless there is proof). I'm pretty shocked someone would think they don't need to pay their bill for that reason!

How long ago did the stuff go missing and did you tell the YO about it? When you told them, did they agree to accept responsibility for the things you said were missing? I would suggest that you pay your bills, as expected and chase up anything that goes missing in a timely manner.
