Yay glad to hear it came out quick and easy - my mares did not! Took 3 hours and enough sedation to wipe out an elephant.

I was told to flush daily especially as her tooth was right at the back, I didn't even manage it once! She was so traumatised from the experience she wouldn't let me near her mouth. Luckily it all healed up with no issues although my vet popped some putty type stuff in the wound which helped it heal and stop anything getting in.

Eek, sorry to hear that! Can't say I'd let someone near my mouth after that either... not sure I'll have too much luck myself tomorrow but I'll give it a go. So pleased that your mare's mouth healed up OK.

Good newd OP, glad its out. I am very squeamish when it comes to teeth, i think i would need a huge amount if valium to get through my own extraction let alone my horses tooth extraction, there is no way i could be present, i would pass out.

I have the dentist out to mine next week. Totally dreading it, she's had a fracture where the vet removed a slab fragment, the actual tooth on xray was fine, just the slab had cracked and food was getting stuck. Was glad the tooth didn't have to be removed- they said around £1200 and then vet costs for once a day for seven days to flush etc.

I said with all her orthaepedic issues and her lame yet again that if it needs to come out then it either stays on extra bute or she is pts. I cannot justify paying arpund £2000 in total.

I know that makes me sound like a super bitch but i just won't do it.

I've been brushing her teeth for diastema as directed by vet everyday. Or trying to but we are on an hour timeslot so an awful impossible amount of things to do makes it damn near impossible but doing my best.

Her breath smells so I am sure it won't be good news next week but she is eating fine with no glimmer of pain to be seen so fingers xsed.

Sorry didn't mean to hijack your post.

Oh gosh @hopscotch bandit, that does sound stressful! Keeping my fingers crossed for you and your mare. Money doesn't grow on trees at the end of the day and if she has other issues as well then sometimes a difficult decision has to be made. Well done on getting her teeth brushed though, even with the time restrictions.

Our dentist said to use a cap of minty listerine in a litre of warm water to flush hazels gap where her tooth had been extracted, She loved the minty fluid but be careful her field mate stole the bucket and drank it all:D
Yep I use Corsodyl Chlorhexadine which i dilute and syringe as well as use the toothbrush. It's a minty taste. The vet said to use hibiscrib diluted but i wanted to give her a nice experience ?
