I have a 13h welsh b and her owner is my 4 year old daughter, I want to get them out and about this summer but what can we do? Pony is to high for lead rein, dd is just coming off lr and said pony is a little forward but takes care of dd when she is on board, pony has popped a few jumps tho very early stàges of jumping and comes from a showing pedigree and is pretty. Am after some inspiration on classes we could do, we are new to showing and just a mum n daughter wanting to make some summer memories.. Tia

At that height there's not a lot you can do as the pony is too big for First Ridden too. You will be restricted to the fun classes like Best Turned Out, Best Rider classes, Fancy Dress and the likes.

In-hand wise she could do Child Handler classes.

Classes I can think of at our local shows..

Family pony first ridden
First ridden (no canter)
M&M first ridden
Clear round sj
Lead rein working hunter

Most of my local shows allow larger ponies in FR and LR classes (even though at affiliated level there are smaller limits) We had no trouble taking a 12.2 in to a FR class at the weekend, they didnt attempt canter which was fine - the judges are usually very child friendly. I've seen ponies over 14hh in these classes at local level before - the judges can usually tell who needs to be on a lead rein or classed as a FR and who may be a pesky pot hunter. If you are unsure a quick call or email to the secretary to check if you will be able to do these classes would be a good idea

Some shows have First Year First Ridden or Tiny Tots First Ridden classes too so keep an eye out for those

As Fiona says lead rein working hunter is an option and could be a really fun one to do, at my local riding club the fences are almost on the ground for the small pony classes

My 13.2 has done LR and first ridden - and family pony, PC pony etc. etc. You can't show affiliated because of the height. But you can get a load of summer fun in PC Shows and unaffiliated. If you want to aim for a big stay away show final look for classes which offer either a sunshine tour qualifier or a cricklands qualifier. (Can depend on where in the country you are.)

Don't ignore handy pony which is a great start to trec and can be done LR or not. Or fancy dress if that floats your boat.
