if a fellow livery (farm livery) had advertised that she was looking for a loan pony but you happen to know that she has previously had 2 horses removed by their owners while on loan to her due to poor care:(
She's one of those who is very good at playing the 'poor me' victim, telling everyone how heartbroken she is over losing her old pony , forgets to mention she only used to visit him once a day in winter as she was 'too busy', he was turned out in a lw rug all winter until he died poor old chap:( now her current pony has lami and she's talking about having it pts.

would you somehow try and warn anyone offering her a loan that she does not have a particularly good track record regarding care or would you think it's none of my business and do nothing?

That's a very difficult one. I think I would leave alone BUT if I saw down the line, the pony was being neglected then I would get in touch with WHW etc.

At the end of the day, the owner of the loan horse should be keeping a distant eye on what's going on.

What SHOULD you do? Mind your own business...

What WOULD I do? Make sure everyone who needs to know, knows...

lol very good:D there's a very fine line between being a busybody and being concerned for a ponys welfare, trying to draw that line is not easy i'm finding:o

Very true!

Have you tried to have a chat with this girl? maybe she just doesn't know any better?

Ignorance rather then negligence?

ohhh she's no 'girl', in her 50's if not 60's and 'has romany in her blood' so knows it all!! if someone she didn't know well approached her she would listen intently, make all the right noises and then carry on exactly the same, if its from someone she knows she'll tell them to mind their own business, she's been doing it since before they were born etc etc:rolleyes:

Oh shes one of those is she :mad:
Tell her shes wrong and she obviously doesn't know what she is doing or the poor thing wouldn't have lami in the first place! then proceed to say if anything else suffers you`ll be reporting her!
And I completely agree that the owners of these poor horses should be keeping an eye on them! disgraceful!!!
Tough position for you then :/ good luck x

I would be asking YO what they hell SHE was doing whilst old pony died from lack of care. YO/YM have a duty of care also.....
And what was everyone else on the yard doing that it got so bad he died???
I would have been on the phone day and night to welfare!

It's farm livery and everyone has separate fields and you don't go into others areas unless you're invited. The farmer certainly doesn't get involved in how people care for their horses, he wouldn't know one end from the other for a start and thinks that it's odd that we rug our horses when cattle manage without;)
The only people who would have maybe been aware of how things were with the old pony is her neighbours and they are either worshipping the ground she walks on or stabbing her in the back depending on which phase the moon is in:rolleyes: obviously the moon was not in the right position for them to alert anybody at the time but they sure as hell let us know when it was too late:(

Why has she had the ponies taken off her? Is she neglectful or does she need education? If she struggles to pay for them and their health suffers maybe have a quiet word to see if it's really viable for her. If she has the cash but no idea how to look after them maybe it's something you could help with? Be careful of contacting people before they loan to her as it'll look like your putting the poison down. Try to establish why she's failed the previous ponies before but as others said the ponies welfare is paramount. Any responsible owner who loans should keep a regular check on
Loaned out horses or ponies or even ask for references from previous loaners. I would if I was loaning out.

I let my horse go on loan in February (first time I've ever loaned out) was careful, he was kept on a yard I knew, loan agreement signed etc, I found out from a third party he was lame, she/yard hid it from me, I had to go fetch him 2wks ago he was starving, hopping lame, all in less than 12 weeks, he's now in the equine hospital about to be PTS. I want to tell EVERYONE NEVER to loan these monsters horses EVER but due to the legal case I've got going on I must be 'good' and do it all 'properly'.
If I were you I would warn as many people as possible. I'm sick with guilt I sent him there, I kick myself I believed them all he was fine. I'll never get over this, I'm going to lose him because I didn't check as much as I wanted to for fear of being 'paranoid'..
Please warn people, don't let someone end up like me & my boy.

Farmer has duty of care, end of. So does every other livery.

farmer may have but please explain how i have to a pony i can't see from the main farm track or from my field:confused:
If i see someones pony/horse has escaped i will try to catch it and return it, if one of the ones i can see on my route to my field or in the field next to mine are in any kind of trouble, be it tangled in a rug, lame or any other of the multitude of things horses manage to do while their owners are not present then i either sort the situation or contact the owner, not that i have everyones details but the farmer does. if i see one of the cows or calves in trouble i find the farmer. i don't feel i have a duty of care to go round checking every single pony /horse on the farm!! i'd be told where to go and quite rightly too!!

really sorry to hear about your boy:( it is stories like yours that make me feel i should warn a potential loaner if i can, i would want someone to warn me if they knew i was about to loan or sell a horse to someone like that!! Hope you can get some justice for your poor boy.x

Thank you ibblebibble, that's exactly what I would want, someone to warn me. I'll never forgive myself for this, sending him there. Vets are doing all they can but he is in such a bad way.. x

Op, how do you know how her pony died, how many times a day she visited, and what type of rug he was turned out in? How do you know current pony has lamp?

She has posted on fb about current pony plus told a few on the farm, regarding the old pony, i knew she was only visiting once a day because it came up in a conversation with her, as for the other details those came to light after the ponies death from a friend who was there when the vet put pony to sleep.

So you were aware there was potentially a problem, and this is where your duty of care comes in to play - I'm assuming that you told the YO so that he could monitor the situation, and do whatever was necessary to ensure the old pony was receiving the care and attention it required.

And you know that the other pony has laminitis (as do others) and again, can make sure the YO knows - so that this pony receives the care and attention it requires.

ahhh finally, knew you'd get round to this in the end after the tedious question and answer session, why can't you just come out and say what you really think Amymay, it would save so much time:rolleyes: would help me to work out whether you are actually trying to give advice or just show your contempt

Because sometimes you have to ask a question or two to find out the information you want, before commenting ;)
