I have Chester on loan from my husbands uncle and auntie.
Both are not in the best of health and have said to my mother in law that they are thinking of selling everything and kind of semi retiring. They have about 6 horses in total including Chester. Their children have lost all interest in riding and so their horses are just field ornaments.
About a year ago they offered me Chester for £2000 including his wardrobe. At the time I knew I would be fine to have him as long as I wanted as they were in good health and had no worries.
The thing is I am getting a compensation payout soon of £1000. I was going to use the money to have a holiday for hubby and I, but now this has all happened and the threat of loosing Chester is making me re think.
Chester really is my horse of a lifetime as we both learn from each other and while he will never be the best he's really good for me.
I'm wondering if I should offer to buy Chester for £1000 but send his tack etc back and buy a cheap saddle until I can afford a nice one.
His tack alone is worth nearly £1000, as its all GFS leather and is nearly new.

Yep :D screw the holiday and buy the horse :D:D:D:D:D if they really need to sell then hopefully you can work out a deal with them. Hubby will get over it. lol.

Try to offer them the 1K for him to start with and tell them you cannot afford to pay them any more. Then if they refuse offer them the tack back and see if they will go for that as well as the 1K. Good Luck

Make them the offer, see what they say, explain your situation, ask can you loan the tack till you can buy for yourself. Do be sure you can afford to keep him thought , ie insurance, farrier, ect, and livery costs. Good luck, if he is your horse of lifetime would be terrible to loose him, you would be saying what if for ever!!

Offer them the money for the horse. See what they say. Keep the tack if you can - nothing worse than a cheap saddle to ruin their backs.

I have had him on loan for 18 months and paid for everything myself so it would be no different tbh.
The only difference would be that it would be my name on the passport! :D

Offer the £1000 for horse, you may find that the rest comes with him as he's in a good home. If not, you can get another saddle, you won't stumble upon another Chester as easily though.
