so we are going to go out for a long hack today and decided to go down an area other horse riders use and dog walkers, its all off road and an old farm track that the owners allow people to use, however the house before the lane has 2 collie dogs who are some times out and i am slightly worried incase they are out in regards to not knowing what they are like with horses ?

Would you risk it or not ?
 
If it was my horses then yes, as know they are both fine with dogs barking/running around them.

If you are worried take a long schooling whip and be prepared to stand your ground to the dogs if you think your horse will cope. I always turn mine to stand still and face a chasing/barking dog and say firmly 'back off' to the dogs, and usually works!

Oh she is fine with dogs, our two run in between her legs :rolleyes:

Just cautious now as she has been attacked by a dog in the past and i always think oh god what if...

Will be bringing my schooling whip and shall put my best angry voice on :D
 
No. I used to hack up a certain track that had a small house and bridge to go past. Never had a problem until one day the dog that was always tied to the bridge would not let us past. I had no choice but to try and get the horse past him and over the other side of the bridge. The dogs chain was just long enough for him to jump at my horse but not be able to touch him. This bridge was only about 2m wide so there was very little space left on the bridge for me to ride by. Looking back on it it was a very stupid thing to do. I should have just turned back knowing that the dog might be out. They did have several complaints and the owners did finally keep their dog in the garden instead of tied to a public foot bridge..
Not quite the same but I wouldn't risk it, especially if alone if you are not sure how the horse will react to their dogs. Find another route.

Oh god really ? the people have horses theirself but then im not sure what dogs will be like round strange horse and the horse vice versa. It's a shame though as it's the only off road place to hack round here :(
 
I'd take a walk up there first, maybe see if you can see the owners about and ask if dogs are used to horses riding by.
 
Changed our route for now, but later when we walk the pooches will pop up there and see if they are about to ask :) owners seemed nice enough last time we went with the dogs :)
 
Wouldn't give it a second thought. Especially as if other people regularly use it chances are there would be local rumours if the dogs were an issue. And tbh, even if they are deranged & attack (highly unlikely) I'd simply chase them on the horse. Unless there's a pack, even a pair of hungry wolves won't take on a healthy adult horse that charges them.

^^ Both of these sum it up :D just me being a silly old bat, well we went for it ... and its was lovely ! Dogs very friendly waggy tails from a distance and Tess shouted morning to them :)
