Hi guys, I am new to this group so please be nice.
I have the chance to move yards and wanted to ask what you would all do.

Current yard: Great facilities, including menage, close to home, good price for what you get but it is VERY gossipy and backstabbing.

Possible new yard: No menage but plenty of fields to ride in, only one other person whom I know. Great hacking which is what I do mostly anyway. Will cost more and it is further from where I work BUT I know the people and it will just be us so no room for the livery yard politics!

Do I stay where I am with better facilities, closer and slightly cheaper but not very friendly or make the move?
TIA

If you can afford it and the logistics work sounds like the new yard would be a great bet, a school is nice but for me the hacking would be more important as well. Good luck!

I think it would depend on the quality of the fields at the other yard and if you really wouldn't miss having a school.

Provided the new yard hardly ever loses turnout and you wouldn't miss, for example, not being able to jump for a few months if the fields were too wet, then it sounds like the new yard might be a better fit. I do think I would begrudge paying more for less facilities, but if you felt you were paying for the nice atmosphere, then it might not be so bad. Is the hacking nicer than where you are now? Could you box/hack to a school if you really wanted to?

Is it a private yard? If not, then if one of your friends had to leave for any reason, the yard could become less pleasant with the addition of a new person.

Good luck whatever you decide!

I empathise, having just moved my boy after lots of deliberating. We are now paying more and further from home :( BUT... better (too good?) grazing, our own stable, and great hacking on the doorstep (was very limited before). Friends at both places made it a hard choice, but it was time to make changes for him (due to sand colic) and us (need for greater autonomy and in a bit of a rut with mostly lessons/schooling). One week on, with minor highs & lows (discovered how stressy he is when tied on the yard on his own), we are glad we did it! The weather has been pants but I look at the fields and tracks and know spring/summer will be fab! He is loving his larger paddock and getting used to a different routine. Best of luck with your decision!

I think you need to do whats best for your horse and you.

Sorry that's not great advice, but it's probably best to do what your gut tells you because we don't know every detail about the yards or your horse.

If it helps we just moved my boy a bit further away and for a higher price, in order to get better hacking, a ménage, and someone who can look after him whilst I'm away. I'm glad I made the move and I would do it again, although there are some aspects I miss about my previous yard.

Good luck :)
