Going to view a donkey soon down in Wales 4 hrs away, and trying to decided how to plan it.
I have done this (to Wales) twice before and this visit is very near where I got my welshie from in Camarthenshire. Who we viewed and hire a company £ 300 ish

Do I go view (with livery) in my 4 x 4 then if we like pay the deposit(or whole) and hire a company to bring her as per my pony
" Go in my horsebox 7.5 tons ( heavy wooden body currently sorn ) and view and collect in one.
Hire a small transit type Horsebox ( taken longer to drive ) but less diesel and more recently serviced vehicle.

What would you gals do?

I'd hire the transit type and go in that - either that or borrow a trailer and put it on the back of the 4x4 :)

I'd hire the transit type but check regarding excess mileage in the small print and late drop off fees

I hired one and drove over the X amount of allowed miles and had to pay extra for every mile over plus extra for returning the box late as the journey was so long, all absolutely fair enough but something I missed on the paperwork and which added nearly another 50% to the hire charge

Unfortunately I wont tow............. don't mind the caravan but I have not towed a horse trailer since 1989 and we had a near fatal accident and I nearly lost my young filly i brought so now scared of towing unless a real emergency. That is why I brought a box :)

So far I have £ 105 to hire one + diesel and extra mileage as it will be over 200 miles complete, just waiting for a company to call me to get a transporter to bring her

I would view the donkey first. At least that way you have time to think about it on your way home. If you take transport with you, it's too easy to make a rash decision. Then I'd pay a transport company to deliver.

I don't envy you doing that drive my Mum lives in Carmarthen it took me 9 hours to get home once and 8 hours to get there on another occasion in fact every time I go I have a nightmare, I think I would be tempted to hire the smaller lorry and take that cheaper than paying for someone to collect for you at a later date, mind you if you paid £300 for one to be collected before from there I think that is really reasonable for that distance I wouldn't do it for any amount lol!

Well the time is drawing near to our long journey to Wales to view our future donkey. The place is a well known place and respected and has very healthy donkeys on offer as he works alongside the Donkey Sanctuary.

Journey mapped out as mostly M 4 till the last 2 hour, it will take about 3 1/2- 4 hrs driving sadly all me doing the driving. A few potty breaks on the way down and mouthfuls to eat, those of you on my Facebook will see out check ins exited, as we really missed the Heee Haww sound. I know my little Welsh A will be pleases to have a neighbour as she really missed my beloved Melody before we lost her to Colic in May 2015.

Not as Far as I went to view my pony but still a fair journey, I know many think it is a long way but sometimes you have to travel to view things you want. She has come over from Ireland and is a young donkey and apparently very sweet. So roll on Wednesday Wales here we come, hopefully it wont be a wasted journey like my last Loan mare in Monmouthshire.

The guy who owns her will transport her as my box is sorn and would burn off too much diesel

Watch this space...................................................:)

Right off to buy some nibbles for the journey and map ready and route sorted, then we may be back as donkey owners to join all you other donkey lovers :D

Good night sleep ready for tomorrow x

Good luck!

Although I think that there's very little chance of you coming back without a donk!! ;)

My little fella is just the best!
Ah but prob will has not taking the box so the guy would bring her up as soon as. But your right to a point little chance of us not coming back without agreeing we will have her and be her owners. :D

Just got home 1 hr ago 452 miles * Yawnnnnnnnnnnnn * few prats on the road nearly 12 hrs from when I left this morning - 2 hrs down with the donkeys and a few potty breaks = 40 mins maximum leaves 4. 45 mins each way. Longer coming home due to the weather

Boy was it worth it to see them all. Here are a few pictures

Those ears! She's lovely, but so is the pale coloured one too!

Yes he/she is, the pale coloured one and the other 5 in there are all rescue and only just came in so need to chill and recovered before ready for rehoming/sale. Owner asked us to go in there feed them so they get used to kind strangers. The other one in with ours here below in picture *Patch* has already found a home and will be leaving soon

Aww too cute! I would have wanted them all !

I know very little about donkeys so tell me what is it that makes them extra special to you than horses? I remember your heartbreaking post with little Melody :-(
