Hi all, the vet came to check as we suspect my maresume might be pregnant. Colt got in with her 14th June so pretty far along. Rang the vet explained and he said he'd do an internal rather than a blood test as she'd be so far along if pregnant.
Unfortunately the vet I spoke to sent a new vet. I explained myself again and he said as we didn't have stocks he would only blood test. She's had her vaccs but she wasn't happy about giving blood. She was a little upset but he took so long he took the needle out and said he'd have you come again because by then she was really upset.
He looked at her and said she looks pregnant. ..There's definitely something in there you'll have to just wait and see...
Should I try another vet ? He didn't want to sedate her incase she aborted. ..I'm not happy with the quote there's something in there ? What if that something isn't a foal?

Not pay the bill for starters, If I can't fix someones boiler because it's a "little difficult", and then make matters worse, I don't charge and wouldn't expect them to pay.

can you feel the foal kicking? If so, it can't be anything else than a foal (or 2?).

ETA: I think there is a risk for the mare (very low but still) when they do an internal, so would personally avoid if you can feel the foal kicking.

the something will be a foal, horses have a different shape when they're in foal to when they're just fat or wormy. If she had some kind of massive foal sized tumour she'd be obviously ill by now. You've got a vet telling you she looks healthy but foal shaped and you know a colt got in with her, don't go looking for things that don't exist. :smile3:

Agree with Pedantic about the vet bill too. You booked an appointment for an internal examination. Vet came out and refused to do it, couldn't even do a blood test, I'd not pay any of it not even the call out fee. Unless he was there for half hour while you picked his brains for advice on foals or something, I can't see you got anything out of that vet appointment.

PS, to answer the title question, I'd do a happy dance that I now had the extra horse I wanted but had agreed not to buy :biggrin3: That probably isn't helpful though, sorry.

Lol, same here!

OP your mare has a couple of months to go. You might start to see changes in her udders around now.

Thanks for the replies, I didn't know about the examination. I guess I just wanted a definite so I'd paddock her off etc.
I bought a box last winter to start showing this summer , guess she's got out of that. Hopefully the foal will be as sweet as their mum x

rope in a helper and do mare and foal classes?

TBH I'd want her checking for twinning - this is normally done very early on in the pregnancy and it's surprising just how many mares do twin - it's then normal practice for one to be 'pinched' and removed but obviously you haven't had that happen here.

I'd ring back and speak to the vet who you had your original conversation with - tell them why you weren't happy with the visit and tell them that you either you won't be paying or you want another visit (but to only get charged for 1) Your vet should at this point be able to scan for twins.

Good luck with your BOGOF :)

Might try the mare and foal classes :-) although she's a coloured cob and the dad's a tb x sports horse so who knows what it will look like :-)
Madlady I might do that, there's a horse nearby that has just had twins that sadly died , might splash out on a camera.
