Retired 13yo TB mare that I'm trying to rough off for winter, but still very thin on the hair front at the moment.
It's going to be 17/18° and rainy all day here, would you pop a sheet on for the day? It does feel a bit chilly but I don't know whether that's just because I'm tired ?. I had said to myself that I was leaving it as long as possible before even thought about putting a rug on her.

ETA: She has arthritis in her spine and hocks, hence the worry of her getting wet and cold.

It depends. My oldest pony is still naked but she does have shelter. The other, not so old, was in a truly foul mood yesterday so has a 50g on currently. If you think your horse will get chilly put the sheet on. I’m not sure it’s going to be warm enough to make her too hot, although it’s meant to brighten up here by lunchtime.

With the underlying health conditions I would be tempted to yes.

It would depend on wind (mine don't care at all about rain that falls straight down but when it blows under their coats it's a different matter)
and depend on natural / provided shelter - with limited shelter I probably would, if she had a lovely big bedded down field shelter I'd try to be tougher

To me 17 degrees is practically a summers day so I wouldn't.

That's why I was dithering, normally I wouldn't rug anything until it went below 10°, but then equally I thought, in years gone by, she would've had a rug on on a day like today as I wouldn't have wanted her to get dirty (I am ridiculous and don't like dirty in work horses)

Wet and windy and 17 degrees a rug would be a strong possibility.
Wet and still and 17 degrees probably not.

I went with a rug in the end. There wasn't any wind persay, maybe a bit of a breeze, but the rain was icy. I've just gotten home after finishing jobs and am frozen on the bits that didn't have a coat on.

I think it's the arthritis that was worrying me, she's been struggling since it got a bit colder and damper, and I've had to start bandaging her back legs overnight so didn't want to inadvertently make it worse by trying to get her to toughen up too quickly. Thanks everyone

My friend has arthritis in her hands and she said they were very painful yesterday so I think you probably made the right call.

I just bought a rambo summer series and its perfect for times like this. I wasnt sure if it was just another thing I didnt actually need, but I can see me getting a lot of use out of it

I hadn't heard of those before now but I've just looked them up and love the look of them. One of those would have been perfect for today! I think I'll get her one for next year

My 14yo ID has arthritis in her hocks (and likely spine, getting xrays soon) I keep her going with groundwork and long lining- this morning she definitely was stiff, I cut short our walk so I will be rugging her tonight. I know it sounds ridiculous but my experience tells me that keeping her warm makes a hell of a difference.

Swish also do a flysheet x rainsheet which I popped on my pony with KS last night. She really doesn't need rugging but I know if she gets wet and cold she's a lot stiffer.

Yes, Amber's baby. Check the time, I got it right before she said ?, but not the back up prize if Amber has lost the foetus.
