I look after a NF cross at one of my freelance jobs, his actual owner doesn't seem to have anything to do with him, the technical loaner has essentially had him dumped on her as he is no longer fit for ridden work so owner doesn't want him back if she can't loan him out again, I/ lady I work for has borrowed him ( no paperwork) as a companion for her retired pony. Pony has a few issues which the lady I work for has been helping with ( regular chiro treatments have made a huge difference to how he moves, she has paid for the dentist and sorted some issues there including him missing half a tooth), the problem I've got is that we got him tested for cushings ( had some classic signs but nothing too bad) and he's come back positive so vet wants him on half a prascend a day to see how he gets on, however I'm already paying for his bute myself as he's old and stiff and was showing slight issues getting up, I can't afford the parascend too, his owner is aware of all the issues he has but won't get in touch / reply to discuss. Both loaner type people say its not their responsibility and I'm stuck looking at him every day and wanting to do the best I can for him.
If you had to choose between bute for daily comfort or parascend to treat cushings and therefore prevent other complications from that what would you pick?

If the lady you work for has a valuable job for him (as a companion) then she is probably the best candidate to fund his ongoing medical care.
Not sure how you ended up paying for the bute other than some kind person who was the last in line !

If she is unwilling to help, then it might be his time. I don't think choosing between vet recommended medication is realistic if the vet thinks he needs both.
I would tell owner that I am going to PTS on XYZ day. perhaps speak to BHS about legal paperwork (likely abandonment notice) to make sure everyone is clear that you are legally allowed to. Then I would let him enjoy a few bute filled days before the weather turns grim.

If you will struggle to afford the PTS, there is nothing wrong with telling the current loaner you are retracting care and funds from 'x' date and she needs to take responsibility for the horse from that date. You do not have responsibility for this horse, you don't have to fund PTS, you don't have to take on this emotional load. You have done your best and everyone involved frankly seems to be taking the p!ss OP.
