X-rays - how long for results to be reported?

I’m an impatient person when it comes to my horses wellbeing, but I also know that vets have a lot more to deal with than just me! So I’m wondering how long after X-rays were taken would you expect them to be reported back?

X-rays were taken last Thursday by a locum vet, who then shot off back to the practice and I assume passed the images to one of the regular vets. Locum didn’t make any comment on images whilst here and I was too busy holding a too heavily sedated horse up to be my usual nosy self.

How many days would you leave it before you follow up and ask about them? I also had bloods done but I know vitamin E and selenium get sent away so don’t expect those results back this week.

The main reason I’m a bit anxious is that the horse showed some damage to the bone surface after an accident last year and my neurotic self worried about weakening of the bone that could lead to fracture. So it’s me being a paranoid owner really.

Usually I get feedback whilst the vet is still in attendance. If they are taking them back for a review with a more experienced vet I would expect to get the results the following day unless advised otherwise.

I would call your vets if only to check that they have not been forgotten.

I agree with the others who have said vet views upon taking the images and gives me an idea. With my trickier one last year they said they’d review with their team later that day and called me at the end of the day to follow up (and then the day after with more opinions). Basically in short, I’d either expect it on the day or the following days with regular updates.

X-rays there and then but I’ve only had them done at the practice before.

It did take a week for a recent blood test to come back through

I’ve always been told about the X-rays on the day too previously especially as it’s a teaching hospital, they usually talk them through with the students at the same time.

I didn’t want to hassle as I didn’t want my vet to feel he had to call me out of hours or something. But he contacted me at about 5pm. All x-rays now received and several hours spent obsessing over them! On the plus side my horses liver bloods looks great! Given they were deaths door type numbers in the summer, I’m over the moon. Will have to hold on for vitamin E results.

I would also expect news within 48hours, would they have sent them on to a referral vet hospital or something?

I think it was more a case of a locum attending who wasn't that invested in the horse, and a busy vet practice who didn't see these as particularly important (just placating a paranoid owner), so they just got pushed down the list.
