I am looking at horses at present around the 10 k mark. They are younger 4 and 5 year olds. Do I do a 5 stage and x ray or do I pay loss of use insurance for a few years. Which is really expensive.
Anything over 10k with insurance I need x rays so currently on the border.

After retiring a lovely 4 year old due to uvetis after x raying him as a 3 year old I am now unsure what is best. I did not have LOU for him!
I know it's been asked a lot but would like some opinions.

As X-rays didn’t help when purchasing your last youngster I think I would go for the best insurance you can get and hope that gives you peace of mind.

I suppose it depends on how you would manage another horse that couldn't be ridden.
Stage 5 and x-rays hopefully give you a better chance that the new horse will remain sound.
LOU doesn't do that, but it means you have money for a new one if they go wrong, but then you still have another retired horse to care for.

There's no way of guaranteeing a new horse will remain healthy and sound for any length of time, which is probably why we all end up owning more than one.

For that sort of budget, I'd probably go for both tbh but I never buy anything that expensive and so may be the wrong person to give an opinion.

In order to claim the full LOU payout do you have to have the horse euthanised? If you're OK with this then you have money to buy another horse. In my case I have a horse which would definitely have been a LOU as he's been unrideable since age 4. I don't want to pts and the cost of keeping him for potentially another 20 years at ~£3K each year makes recovering the purchase price insignificant anyway.

For me xrays are a better option to mitigate the risk of more slackers accumulating here and having no horses suitable to be ridden but really it depends on your own situation and outlook.

I might be wrong but I don't think you do have to pts to be able to claim LOU. It may vary by policy/ insurer though.

The xrays are non negotiable if you want insurance with vets fees, so its just if you want LOU. It notoriously hard to get a pay out so I'd do a bit more research into that side of it and compare costs before you decide

No you don't have to pts - they are branded with an l or they used to be. I have seen a few horses with them. Vets fees for agria who I will use - you need x rays if the horse is 10k plus for vets fees and then it's a specified list.

yup branded with an L in a circle so LOU can't be claimed against them twice.

I'd probably do whatever xrays I needed for insurance and pay for LOU for the first year.
