XC Clinics

For my best friend's 17th birthday, I want to pay for her to go on an XC clinic. I've been advised to have a look at Lucinda Green's clinics but I've looked at videos of her clinics and I really don't think the sort of lesson would suit her pony, who is a rather "laid-back" 14.2hh 7-year-old New Forest gelding, so I was wondering if anyone new of anyone who does good, affordable XC clinics in or around Gloucestershire? I don't have mountains of money to spend either but I'd just like to see what's out there. Thank you so, so much in advance, we've both never been to a proper cross country course (her pony has many times, however) and I really don't know where to start! x

As you have both never done any XC why not book your usual instructor or someone recommended locally and hire a local course, with just the two of you it may be more beneficial and can be geared up to suit your experience rather than joining in with an unknown group and instructor, possibly the most cost effective as well as being easier to organise.

Nick Gauntlett is excellent. Far less daunting than LG. He is at Chipping Sodbury and his website is http://gauntlett.me.uk/ Your friend could have a one to one lesson at his place which would be better than a clinic if she's never jumped XC before.

Where in Glos are you? Rachel Sheldon is a good encouraging instructor for someone not used to doing cross country - she is based between gloucester and bristol, so easy access to Leyland Court, which is a nice first time place to go for a clinic.

I would second Nick Gauntlett, he is an excellent coach, very positive in his approach and not at all scary.

I also quite like Owen Moore who teaches at Lyneham Heath (which is the best XC schooling course in the country ;-) ), again, very nice and positive. Or, Bill Levett is doing some clinics at Swalcliffe over the next 2 months, he is also lovely and a great trainer.

Have fun!

Thank you all! I'll have a look into all the people and we've done DIY cross country in open fields but just haven't been to a proper course as my pony didn't load up until a few weeks ago. We're planning to go XC before I'd like to book the clinic/lesson so we'll have been beforehand. We love our current instructor but I was just looking for someone new just because it's always nice to get a second opinion on your riding and your horse. Than you so much, again! x

Definitely recommend Nick Gauntlett or Owen Moore and Lyneham is amazing - I'm thinking of going and finding somewhere to stay overnight so can do 2days training as a trek from us but the best place I've ever been by far!

Star, I'm sure you could stable at lyneham, do you have a lorry you could sleep in? Otherwise if you email Sam she is very helpful and lovely and would know of somewhere to stay. We are not far from lyneham so I am smug :-D

Have you had a look at the BE website - will give you some ideas of trainers. I personally look to find out who is teaching where and then contact them directly myself (works out cheaper). Or you can pick your cross country course and then give them a call to see if they could recommend any trainers for your level - or the local Pony Club/Riding Club. Hope that helps.
