I'm wondering if anyone can give me details of xc hire in Edinburgh Area preferrable East Lothian but can no necessary. I'm planning on taking my horse but I'm struggling to find anywhere as I have no idea where to look. So was wondering if anyone could give me recommendations of places.

Thanks :)

Hello from a fellow East Lothian-ite!

I'm sure there are more but the ones I know of are:

Smeaton in East Linton, a nice little selection of fences from tiny logs to bigger stuff, no water but has ditches/trakhener/steps/corners/combinations. Downside is it's quite compact and there is a single track road winding through course leading to the garden centre so best avoid busy times or you will have an audience! ;) Last summer my instructor and I would meet up for Pony-Wednesdays there. :)

Dalkeith Park, Edinburgh Equestrian. Good selection of fences, organises regular training sessions with Les Smith through the summer.

Tyninghame, East Lothian Pony Club course. Unfortunately only open on specific days for pick a fence/hunter trials/schooling days but great course with nice selection of fences and a good (if a little murky and spooky) water. There are three courses running side by side; from teeny tiny 60cm ish to mahoosive (to me anyway ;) but probably PN size?).

Holefield, Kelso. Never been for various reasons (Weather, lost shoes etc) but my instructor raves about it.

Berwickshire hunt are holding a schooling day over the hunter trial course at Duns on Monday 12th March - details on website. Fences 2'6" to big.

Peelham near Berwick on Tweed used to do xc schooling but I think the pigs ruined the ground so they weren't open last year. :(

Also worth looking out for schooling days over local BE courses (Hopetoun, Oatridge etc) usually the Monday after the event and often with a fabby trainer like David Gatherer.

Hope that helps! If my old crock stays happy and sound we might see you out and about.

As above - looks like you know Smeaton.

Other XC venues a little further afield are:

Edderston, near Peebles - may not be open due to lambing at the moment.

Craigbeck Farm, Moffat - very good range of BE standard fences up to BE Novice.

Ally Bandtock at Yett Stables have just started a XC hire but don't know a lot about it as not been. Think mainly portables but not sure honestly what and sizes etc...

I know previous years Duns Castle HT ran a schooling day on the day after - so should be march 12. Also think Gleneagles has some early David Gatherer training on a Monday.

Think there is a venue near Coatbridge but can't remember the name - sorry. Think it has smaller fences but once again never been.

Holefield near Kelso is good and has three sizes of fence at each option including a small water.

I would look at Peelham if open and with you in East Lothian as a trip down the A1 may just be the ticket.

Otherwise, I would consider an outing to Strathearn Eventing near Perth for a decent school.

Thank you guys :D
Only been to Smeaton once and that was when my friend was selling a horse and mine went as travel companion and the keep him happy so the people could try him out as he was young. Hence the pic in my sig. But having moved down here from Aberdeenshire a couple years ago havent ventured out for many reasons and feel this year (hopefully) our year to do so. lol.
If all goes to plan we are off sj this weekend.
