Hi all,

Im all a bit new to this eventing marlaky, or old if you count Pony Club days!

When I rode pony club we all had bandages that we went XC in, but i guess this is now frowned upon? Though I do love my bandages and its complulsory for horseball!

Im off to a ODE this weekend and had been planning on bandaging as usual there is nothing in PC rules that says I cant wondered though is this "correct"???

I have tendon/fetlock boots for SJ but dont want to XC in them as they are open fronted.

I also have a set of sports boots (combo in front and standard behind) that I train for horseball in, and old scruffy set of brushing boots that I use everyday.

So what would be best to use??? Its just a 75 this weekend (and no water) but I am entering some BRC BE80 later in the season.

Thanks!

I think you can wear bandages but if you were watching badminton I hope that should have put you off!! I have been xc in open-fronted boots once as I forgot by xc boots. The horse was fine although he was always very careful with his front legs.

I would use the sports boots or the brushing boots. Be careful with the combo ones as if your horse was to stand on the over-reach part it could be nasty.

Good luck and have fun :)

Tiana Coudray's bandage unraveled and her horse was stepping on it - heart stopping! They definitely are allowed just not as widely used as they used to be.

I would never use bandages for fast work or xc!
Re the horse running at badminton, the bandage on one front leg came un ravelled, horse was very lucky to not tread on it and potentially have a serious accident! This can happen on a 75cm course or a 4* event. I've seen a very nasty fall on the gallops by a horse treading on a loose bandage. If you really want to use bandages ensure they are taped very well to ensure the don't come undone!

If you are happy with bandages I would carry on and use with plenty of insulation tape, I'm sure you will be fine. Boots can cause rubs and damage too so I would go with what you prefer.

God you lot would die if you saw us play horseball then! Everything (including ref horse) has to wear banadages! And the speed is quicker than XC :D

My thin skinned TB is a pain with boots so if i can bandage with my big pads im just much happier!

Phew one less thing to buy then! Will ensure lots of tape as usual!

Horse ball and polo are completely different, all quite short bursts of speed, with no solid fences for them to potentially get caught and ripped on, you could also stop quickly if anything was to happen, if you're galloping around a xc course, you would have to retire and not finish your round should your bandage come completely un ravelled! Just make sure completely taped up and you'll be fine, Good luck at your comp :-)

And to be fair, I thought horseball was boots or bandages, not bandages being compulsory?

Personally I wouldn't take a horse XC without tendon guard protection. If you must bandage, please don't tape them, sew them up instead, much less likely to unravel that way.

The problem with bandages is the water, as the case was at Badminton. I also think the brush fences don't help. The stalky brush is liable to rip the insulating tape, and then the bandage gets free.

quite a lot of top riders use open fronted boots now for xc. i'd use whatever boots you have that have tendon guards. i would never go xc in bandages unless they were sewn (the way we used to do it). i'd take a horse bare-legged rather than in bandages.

As my Tb is very flighty and he has such stick like legs i try and protect the tendons as much as i can, I use Premier Equine Strike Protect boots i love them!, if the horse catches his fronts with a hind it hits the hard part of the boot!, and they give all round protection.

All these recommending sewn on bandages over taped ones have never obviously seen my sewing skills ;) hehe!

xc boot wise I use PE leather xc boots in front and prolite eventing boots behind. So far never had a slip rub or anything like that andboth pairs seem very sturdy and well made x

I would never bandage for xc - totally different to horseball where you could stop if one came unravelled and nothing to get caught up on anyway. My horse shreaded his boot earlier this year after getting a bit gung ho in a sunken road, taking a stride out and leaving a leg. Don't want to think about what his leg would have looked like without the solid cannon guard.
