Yesterday M and I headed off for a XC lesson with a difference! The first hour was a mind coaching session where we discussed a few skills to help with training and competition nerves. A couple of the methods really resonated with me and I will incorporate them into my schedule and training.

Then out onto the XC course - the session was all about keeping an even pace, rhythm, balance and straightness, it didn't matter what we jumped as long as we did it well and paid attention to those 4 things. We started over a couple of small logs, onto some ditches and then the water. After that we were working on putting a few elements together. I was so pleased with M who took everything in his stride and was thoroughly enjoying himself. His jumping technique is really starting to improve now, he used to take off without his back feet together so jumped hollow but that is now only on an odd occasion, he also used to like chipping in a last stride if he was a bit far off but now he's confident in pushing off from a bit further away if necessary.

A few pics below - I have some vids too but can't work out how to post them ??

One of the things I will use is to spend 1 minute before I'm about to do something scary and talk (to myself) about only things that are going to go right during my ride or things that will feel nice - that I will feel the warm breeze on my face, see some wildlife during my ride, ride on good ground where the horse will enjoy a nice trot or canter, that the rhythm will be just right, he will be forward but totally in control, that the view will be beautiful etc etc - no negatives. We tried this yesterday and as I'm normally a bit of a nervous jumper it worked very well as when I got on board and warmed up around the jumps they were the things I was thinking about.

Another thing we discussed was focus, if you are focussing really hard on riding your lines, making sure the pace, rhythm, straightness and balance is correct then that can really help because you don't get time to think about other things :)

Thank you, I really like those methods for controlling nerves.I'm going to try them.
Shame I didn't read this yesterday before I went to a hunter trial! ;)
