Went to Gt W this morning with Jerry, decided to be brave and left him in the grackle, along with the NS universal. He had to have a day off yesterday as I didn't get home in the light, so he was very very fresh. Warmed up and he had one tantrum then gave in and was OK, started of jumping very 'up' and stuffy, but as he got used to the bit/noseband combination he got better. Jumped a few intro fences and then concentrated on the PN ones, he was brilliant, had a moment at the coffin but that was more me than him and he took off after a seconds hesitation. Then went on to the water, followed my trainer though first and then did it on our own, no problems. So went on to the second water and we decided he really should do this one on his own. He stopped and planted him self, got one smack and then jumped in. After that he was perfect, did a few combinations into both waters and didnt hesitated once. Such an improvement from before!

Then he did the steps, and acted like he had been doing them all his life! Then a few skinnies which he had no problems with either. We then strung some fences together and went away from trainer's horse, causing on little nap but then once he realised he was jumping a few he went forwards. Left it at that as he was so good

Trainer wants him to start at PN sooner rather than later, I am still aiming for a intro first time though

He was jumping out of his skin though today and felt so powerful, cant wait till we start competing.

Thankyou so much for all the bit/noseband suggestions, seems like we have found something that works. I am also going to leave him in the grackle from now on as he was so much better today, so hopefully by the weekend he will have accepted it

Grackle and NS universal, seems to work without his argueing too much, you still have to be very sutle when you check him but loads better than he was.

My trainer also wants me to take him round in spurs next time as he had moments where he was so dead to my leg, then others when he was the opposite! So we will see

It was so funny at the steps. When he did the ones at Poplar he just kind of fell off then bucked in annoyance, so we were a bit wary, but he did them perfectly. I was sitting so defensivly expecting these huge bucks..and all he did was step off quietly and canter off

glad to hear he was such a good boy, sounds as if he loves it!

It is definatly his best phase, finds it all so easy, if his SJing was more consistant then I wouldnt hesitate in going straight in a PN but think it would be silly to push it

Ooh , he sounds fantastic!! How exciting!! At last everything is coming together, he sounds like he will be an ace XC horse.

I think that I may try the NS universal bit after reading your report, I have a very strong horse to jump! Only tried him in a Myler so far, and he just ran away in that. I have more control in a snaffle than I do in any other 'stronger' bit, but the snaffle is still not enough control! ( if that makes sense!)

J was great in it, and he was a nightmare in the myler, the lozange snaffle is the bit I had the most control in, but the NS is like riding him in that but finer tuned if that makes sense.

He is turning into a star, just hope we can sort out the other 2 phases now, and then need to decide on his first BE outing

Thats just what my horse has, a lozenge snaffle for his 'normal' work. Fab that sounds like it may work!

I think with the SJ, he will be loads better jumping outdoors like they do with BE. I hate jumping indoors unless I have a horse that canters like a pony !

I'm so glad you had a fab XC session. I'll look forward to reading your event reports very soon! I'm so jealous as I'm desperate to take my horse XC but everywhere is too wet up here
