I dont have stud holes at the minute (economy drive!) but have seen a couple of hunter trials I would like to try if I can find the money - would be doing 2'3" class as its ages since we have done anything

Would I be mad to consider doing a HT without studs? Must emphasise that if we dont have some rain I wont be doing anything, the ground is like concrete around here at the mo

no, a hunter trial without studs is FINE.
i competed my 12 2hh all year eventing and hunter trialing etc at 2'9''/3'0'' and we NEVER EVER EVER used studs, and never sliped!

if your not gallopping doing hard combinations with tight turns etc at like BE PN+

then i personally dont think u need studs.

I did Eland Novice HT in May without studs and it was fine, no slipping.

The ground was good to firm that day, but I think even if it was wetter it would have been OK still.

I suppose it would depend on the soil type as well though, clay would be more slippy than sandy soil, for example.

No - we did XC today without. Badger was slipping A LOT in the warm up though but was ok on the course. Just be careful on your turns.

Oh well thats positive, I thought everyone would be saying 'nooo, dont do it'

The fences being so small helps I suppose, will have to be careful to do nice wide turns when required

Now, to try and find some money so I can enter.... well, I didnt really want to eat this month did I?

tbh - you wont even miss them. As Figjam knows I XC without studs and feel that as others have said, until you get up to PN height. Dont even think about it when ur out there, just go have fun!

Steeplechasers NEVER wear studs(banned),if your hunter trial is going to be tougher than tha Grand National then youve got far more to worry about than studs.

I am on the economy drive too and my horse usually always has studs but I spoke to my farrier before he shod him last week and said I am doing a HT this Saturday, should I have studs. His reply was no, he would only suggest them for showjumping on grass anyway when you are doing tight turns. So I have not got them this time.

You'll be fine at that height xc - just ride sensibly according to the ground and watch any tight turns.

I never used studs until we started 90cm+ sj & xc.

hmm, the Grand Nat doesn't have any tight turns though!

i'd be very careful about your turns if jumping on grass without studs. if the ground is perfect you'll be fine, ditto if its very deep, but if it's hard underneath and slippery on top it might be dodgy.

Indeed! I also know someone on here has been successfully competing BE Intro this year with no shoes, let alone studs! I used studs for my BE events, but for my last unaff ODE I didn't as the ground was rock hard (although flat at least, not rutted) and dry as a bone.

I've done all my HTs this year studless up to 90cm (and the XC for my unaff ODE was up to 1m) and been fine, just be aware if there's a tighter turn and make sure you're balanced. My horse is naturally very balanced which makes it easier for me.

Will be studless at next HT in Oct as it's my last thing of the year, she's due new shoes before it and it's pointless getting studholes put in just for it. I find them most beneficial for the tighter turns in dressage/SJ anyway.

After being lazy yesterday and not studding up then going a right perler on a bend (which i must say i was not going mad at) and now I'm suffering from concussion. I will always stud up from now on
