So my low mileage, young horse has not looked or felt sound in trot to me, so vet out for lameness work up, the vet couldn't find anything significant, but I had noticed a thickening on his hind pastern, so X Ray booked for today. The vet wasn't expecting to find anything major, but my boy has significant changes including bone spurs on three pasterns, his RH being the worst withbone chips and a tear in his sesamoid ligament, also marks on the bone, which the vet had never seen anything like before, he's sending the images to a more experienced practise and we are discussing prognosis tomorrow !! I'm gutted to say the least and honestly emotionally exhausted with horses, it's a year nrly since I put my mare to sleep!! D was pts in 2016, and I returned a dear loan horse in the summer, all different lameness issues, 5 years of no happy endings !!

Oh boy... you've had a run of it. I could say I'm in the same boat... whatever happens, please try and stay as pragmatic as your heart allows. As much as it hurts, it's never right to keep an animal in pain... I've been close to making the call two or three times now. Can I ask is the horse shod?

Yes he's shod but only recently, I had hoped that the unlevelness I was seeing was due to the hard ground & he did seem sounder for a while. But prior was barefoot.

Am I awful for thinking that I just cannot do the vet treatment again, I've done the endless trips to the vets twice before, injections, therapies, rest, box rest, rehab, bought the supplements, had the physios, done the physio, saddlers, remedial shoeing, spent thousands of hours trawling the internet, bought the rug, the magnetic boots, and every time it ended with the same outcome, PTS.

Nope. Your not awful at all. We have, like you, had a horrendous run of bad luck these past 5 years. We've lost 4 horses, my now 10 year old mare was diagnosed with Navicular 2 years ago and my partners gelding with arthritis 2 years ago (8 years old at the time and thankfully manageable), and on Monday diagnosed with a hole in a hind ligament.

I wont lie, 'the' thought sometimes crosses my mind when I see my mare having the odd off day but they are very few!
It sounds as though you have a series of issues you now have to contend with and the only thing you can do from here is get a really good picture from your vet about the ways forward. Talk about treatments available, sucess rate, time scale and then see if you can bring yourself to go through it all again. Huge hugs to you. they really are heartbreakers.

The vet confirmed that treatment would be pointless and Rodders will go peacefully tomorrow, thank you all for your kind words xxx

Sorry to read this: that's a long run of bad luck, you poor thing.

At least it must be a relief that the prognosis was clear rather than a series of treatments all of which might potentially help, or not. Did the other practice have any idea what the marks on the bone were?

Hope today went as well as possible under the circumstances.

I’m so sorry to read this, you have not had much luck at all and I really feel for you.

Thinking of you and sending thoughts for tomorrow. Respect to you for doing the best thing for him and for yourself xx

Thoughts are with you. RIP run free over rainbow bridge little one...

You did all you could and you took away the pain. So sorry it didn’t turn out the way you’d hoped. Big hugs xxx

The vet phoned me Wednesday night while I was at the yard, so I didn't have a pen, so I can't remember the official diagnosis name. It's Genetic, it's similar to OCD, its the 1st time either vet had seen it in Pasterns, more common in hocks and stifles, both vets agreed PTS best option considering the condition of his pasterns. What I gathered the marks on the bone were caused by the disease affecting his joints.

Yikes re the disease marking his bones. He must have been in quite some pain.

How are you? Hopefully not too put off by horses...ETA though would be very understandable if you were!
