Blumming horses!!!

My chap appears to be ever expanding. 18 months ago I bought him as a MW, new saddles at a W and now has expanded further, close to a XW!!!

It's weird, he doesn't feel wide to ride at all, he just has quite a good front end and well sprung ribs, whilst still having a wither. He is carrying a fraction too much weight at the moment (6/9 below shoulder blade and over ribs)

Dressage saddle can be widened. Jumping saddle can't.

I'm desperately trying not to consider new saddles, but on scouting around ebay etc there are very few jump saddles secondhand in an XW.

What jump saddles do you have on your XW's? Anyone seen any for sale? Ideally I need to trial something and would want a model that could be widened further if the need arose!

Not a great photo to assess saddle fitting but it's the best recent one I have, just in case it helps ...

Bless Turbo, lovely photo :)
Sam had a K2 in XW on Ciara, she sold it second hand on ebay for about £800 when retired her from jumping, was in good used condition.
Actually....oh hang on your reply on FB just popped up will reply on there!

i just had a saddler out to my little mare today - 15.2hh 5 year old, SHE IS WIDER THAN AN EXTRA WIDE!!!!! and apparently she will only get wider... i had ros wrightson out who was fab, specialises in wider saddles and had a massive selection for me to try. she also hires saddles for about £35 a month... let me know if you would like any contact details.

The Bates tree will be no good for my horse.

Unlimited, where is Ros based? Contact details sound good as rent-a-saddle might solve a few short term problems!!!

I fit for another company who specialise in wide and flat horses - worth looking into finding a specialist who understands your shape of horse.

Can I ask from your experience what sort of performance saddles tend to suit this type the best? It's now looking like my dressage one won't really suit alteration either as although it can be widened in front it doesn't have sufficient rear gusset.

The ones that keep cropping up are the TG T8, K&M s-series, Fairfax

I've got a handful I can access to try to buy secondhand to tide me over (jumps) - K2 jump, Black country CC, Nolan & something(!) - are any of those likely to be candidates (all are XW)

Sorry for the questions!

I only really fit the brands I work for - we could talk via pm. Otherwise I find so many "performance" saddles are just not flat enough, if they are wide enough at the points they are too narrow in the head of the tree and this can often mean the rails are too upright, meaning the twist part of the saddle is too narrow for the horse causing instability and pressure points.

As for those saddles it totally depends on the individual model, whether they are made on suitable trees. I have fitted plenty of horses with decent withers that take an XW and normal trees can work for them, but plenty who need a wider "hoop" or semi hoop tree (wider in the head) and a flatter tree both through the rails and from front to back.

Do try a thorowgood cob saddle (or the leather versions) before you go and buy a super expensive one. If you need something with a fairly deep rear gusset (not sure what TG were thinking when they designed the cob saddles!) then it might be perfect. Flat tree, wide head, wide tree, deep gusset. They do however have quite thin gussets at teh front so may not have enough depth there. They also adjustable for when he looses a little bit of weight!

I have just bought a T8 and although its a mw and a dressage saddle i can give it a fab review! I initally turned my nose up at it being half synthetic and almost didn't try it but i love it and its soooo comfy :)
