would you let children on your yard without parent? children taking pony in/out field this could be accident as others want to follow if anything was to happen who gets the blame?
My YO has a policy that all children under 12 have to be supervised and if any children over that age are at the yard its the parents responsibility if anything happens to the horse or the child and this is stated in our contracts so there is no confusion
Depends on age and skill of child. At my yard, the whole family comes down to sort out their pony, with the result that the 13 year old is so mollycoddled that her confidence is at zero. Can't get the mum and dad to leave her and her ned alone.
Depends on age of child, their ability and the pony. As kids aged 8+ we helped out at the riding school mostly unsupervised but times have changed! If youre worried then dont allow it.
I will not allow anyone under 16 to be on my yard without an adult. I am not a creche and am not around to supervise kids, nor am I insured to look after children and I am not CRB checked.

new livery and my horse is pushing her weight around its not too bad..no teeth or kicks but threats and lots of little chases and yet yougster follows her around if she runs from bot of field to top the youngster follows close however you open gate and my horse will want to be first out and is a big girl dont want kids hurt ( if horse gets out loose she still ends up in another enclosed area )..
bosworth- but there are plenty of capable 14 and 15 yr olds surely?
I think the appropriate thing is perhaps 12 and under to be supervised, and perhaps older if they are new to horse ownership or something.
I left a yard due to a no U16s rule that came in, made it impossible for me to ride. I am now 16 so not an issue, but am at a better yard now anyway, so worked out for best.
There are some capable 14/15 year olds out there - but I stress again - I am not insured as a creche, nor am I CRB checked I cannot legally have responsibiliy for children and under 16 they are children. If their parents are not interested enough to be there and supervise then who is. Sorry not my responsibility.
On our yard children under 12 need adult supervision, alsothey are not allowed to turn out or bring in on their own which personally i think is sensible

Absolutely not, children under 14 should be supervied at all times. YO gets the blame.
In our contracts, persons under 14 MUST be accompanied with an adult at all times, whatever their experience/capability/common sense/how good the pony is, etc...
Initially I thought it was abit harsh as at my old yard I had to look after my horse myself on DIY when I was 13 by myself, my Dad worked abroad, and my Mum was scared to death of horses and was against me having one! I didn't have any choice in the matter. If I wanted a horse, I looked after him everyday, twice a day, myself.
I am now 26, and there have been a few things happened where it made it clear this rule was necessary and very sensible!
A very capable 12 year old girl went to catch her pony on her own from a herd of 6 horses. The pony is amazing, really looks after her. She caught her pony and the herd started to stampeed. Sensibly, she unclipped the lead rope and whipped under the fencing while she waited for them to settle.
All the horses had quietened down, so she caught her pony again.
Then this mare appeared and was double barrelling out at the girls pony, he jumped sideways to avoid the attack, and knocked the girl over and trampled on her.
Luckily, a man that lives next to the field had been watching and pulled her out under the fence and fortunately she wasn't seriously hurt.
Speaks volumes to me! I was wrong to doubt the rule, and now I appreciate why we are contracted to it!
I could add several more examples of the above why I support this type of regulation, including where we a few of us have fallen off, been concussed and seriously injured - 3 of us have had broken bones that stuck out of our skin bleughhh - and all 3 of us were aged between 23 and 50!! xx

Nope - no kids on our yard unless accompanied by a parent. (And actually only one child and pony and that's an exception...)
